Movie review thread...

Saw a couple of targeted at kids movies.
Spiderman - Into the Spider-verse. Another Marvel movie, this time made by Columbia Pictures for some reason, and yet another win for them. This is a great fun movie based on the Miles Morales version of Spiderman and featuring alternate universes. It's animated and use a 'comic' style, there's blurred out bits that I thought might be from 3D but they're to replicate smudges etc on comic books and the voice cast is really good. 4 Blonde Peter Parkers out of 5 Peter Porkers.
BumbleBee. A Transformers movie, I had only seen the first and 20 minutes of the second. This would probably be a good kids movie but not that great for adults. But it helps that it's 80s set and uses the 80s versions of the Auto-bots and Decepticons. 2.5 VWs out of 5 Freightliners.

A Simple Favor - Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick.
Decent enough, if not predictable crime/thriller.
Blake LIvely is sexy AF in this though.
3 new BFF out of 5 mommy blogs

Bad Times at the El Royale
Jeff Bridges, John Hamm, Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Johnson
While not a Tarantino film, kinda reminded me of his style (although more, Tarantino-lite)
Was a decent watch, if not a little long, Dakota is pretty sexy.
3.5 pervy motels out of 5 cults

Saw Aquaman, equal parts stupid and fun. There's something to build on for the sequel, just need a better script for Momoa's charisma (and ditch Heard competely).
Some terrible de-aging CGI on Jake the Muss, where a few ropely CGI scenes actually. But they certainly delivered on special effects at the end, which was 100% bonkers. Julie Andrews voices one of the big creatures at the end. (I'm not joking about bonkers)
I liked that the brother was the traditional casting take on Aquaman, thought that was a nice touch.
Go in expecting a light hearted comic book romp and you come away happy. Very different from Snyder's take, but still close enough they all work together.

Ralph Wrecks the Internet: Continuing my kiddies film watching at the moment (and being unable to contribute anything to the cricket threads), this was great. Laugh out loud funny in parts and interesting how they represented the internet. They do a funny bit with Disney princess too. There's a mid credits sequence with pancakes that had me in hysterics. Like Spiderman the voice cast in this film were top notch. 4 milkshakes out of 5 pancakes.

Battle for Sevastopol
Watched this to practise my Russian. Pointless exercise - half the movie is in English and my Russian isn't good enough to watch a movie.
Still, it's pretty well shot and an interesting dramatised story about Lyudmila Pavlichenko, WW2 sniper with 309 kills.
Amusing listening to Russians try to do an American accent, possibly dubbed.
3.5 headshots out of 5 wartime love interests.

Zero Dark Thirty is just so fucking good. It might be one of my favourite movies now
Rewatched it, very good movie, Chastain is very good, has a pretty good cast all round.

In 1995 Ellen Barkin looked like absolute shit (Bad Company). Sexless and very close to the repugnant Barbara Walters. Then she got hot. When and why?
Has anyone ever seen her and Haley Holt in the same room ?

White Boy Rick - Matthew McConaughey
Based on the true story of Rick Jr., who became an undercover informant for the FBI during 80s as a young teen and ended up being arrested for drug-trafficking and sentenced to life.
Decent enough movie, doesnt move rapidly; obviously you take these movies with a grain of salt as you dont know how factual they are and what angle the director is making it from.

Top Gun
Like Kelly McGillis this has not aged well. The dialogue is cheesy and the final scene on the carrier is gay as.

You mean the ones that cut from minimum sweep and maximum sweep in the same movement? Terrible continuity and the dialogue is dreadful.
I say this as someone that loved it when it came out. So if you did too, don't ruin your memory of it by ever watching it again.

I watched it recently with CF jnr. He loved it but then he is 8.... I am sure there is a fair amount of looking through the nostalgia lens for me. You are right on all counts regarding dialogue, the righteous brothers sketch was amateurish on rewatch, and there is a lot of homoeroticism going on, especially Kilmer prancing around like he had a carrot up his butt, and the volleyball scene
