@jegga maybe it's an Auckland thing. I frequently hear everyone lumped in as Asians - subcontinent included

I too have never heard a Kiwi refer to Iranians as Asian, and we've always separated 'East' Asians and Indians.

@No-Quarter Yes, her response was as immature as the actual "incident". And the restaurant with someone named Arvind Kumar as a manager is probably far from "racist" or whatever that means these days. Ignoring the obvious media narrative and her response to the incident the core issue of labeling the group "Asians" in that context still lacks common sense.

I've never heard anyone in NZ use the term in that way. Heard it all the time in the UK though

Is it an age thing? Older kiwis using the British meaning?

Not sure i agree with that so much. Having travelled a bit in Asia, they're racist as fuck, particularly among each other. And against Africans.

When I was working in Sydney I had a cordless drill batteries stolen and I asked the foreman of the crew if Chinese guys with me if he’d seen anyone hanging around where I was working and he pointed at the Koreans working down the hall and said β€œ it was probably one of those fucking g##ks”. Took me a minute to realise he was actually serious.

I can feel her pain. I get described as the bald guy all the time. It hurts because I just want to be treated like everyone else. Bald guys have feelings too. To make me feel better I take it out on red heads, especially the balding ginger at work. Loser.

I live in Auckland and don't notice it here or in the rest of NZ. Definitely a UK thing

From your post I can only assume that loss of hair directly corresponds with the loss of empathy for other people. The world is obviously a hard place for the follically challenged but just remember when the jibes are relentless, "you're special".

When are folk going to realise. Apologising just makes it worse.

Yep. One of my best mates is Malaysian Chinese and he says Asians are the most racist people on the planet.

@Rancid-Schnitzel and it's blanket convenient racism, with absolutely no thought to the complexities, like our grandparents grew up with.

Often excusing the friends of that race, ..." well obviously not you dear...."

    It's adorable πŸ˜€

Ok..what? Self described Asians are claiming the word Asian as a descriptor for them is 'incredibly racist service'..and it makes the front page of stuff.

If you think your own ethnic background "Asian" is a pejorative then I think it might be you with the problem not the restaurant.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/110487760/woman-slams-racist-service-after-group-referred-to-as-asians-on-auckland-cafe-receipt

I can actually understand her logic. She just wants to be seen as everyone else in her native country and when some someone refers to her as "Asian" there can be whole shitload of loaded nuances that goes with that term.

Being of that ethnicity if it happened to me I might be annoyed, depends on how I was treated by the staff. Maybe I'd boycott the place if I felt that strongly (depends how good the food was....). Maybe I'd tell my mates. I don't think I'd go whingeing to the media about it though, seems like the response was disproportionately strong

I've never quite understood why Kiwi's group everyone from Iran - the Philippines as "Asian" and then get hot and bothered when called an Aussie.

Given the negativity associated with "Asian" I can understand that she got triggered. We wouldn't be questioning her stance if the restaurant worker had described a customer as "black"

Why ring the Ferald though? That I don't get

Why? Is it because it would be weird to describe an Asian as black?

I know in NZ we never really are comfortable with describing people as black but it seems to be extremely accepted over here in the UK.

I just never really think of the Indian subcontinent as being part of Asia when talking matter of race. For some reason it is normal in the UK

Aussies (well maybe just Melbournians) are the same.

Friend: "Hey Rembrandt, what was that friends of yours name again?"
    Me:"Which friend?"
Friend: "You know, the one..with...uh...dark hair".
Me: "I'm gonna need more info"
Friend: "ummmm uhhh..you know into politics and stuff..sort of my height shortish hair..um from another country..darker uh..complextion"
Me: laughing now "you mean she's black?"
    Friend: "uh ...yeah"
Me: "you know you can say that, she know's she is black, it isn't a secret!"

It's funny that as people increasingly bend over backwards to appear non-racist they actually start to exhibit behaviours that are racist in that they stop treating people of a different ethnicity as regular people.

@canefan I was questioning why it would be an issue to describe someone as black. Also why is there negativity associated with being Asian? I had absolutely no idea about that.

I don't think there is. Like I said, I probably wouldn't have a problem with it unless the staff treated me badly as well
