It will take a fair amount of faith and effort, but I'll give this a go without immediately dismissing it because of Sean Penn. I completely changed my mind about Tom Cruise as an actor after watching him in Collateral so even Sean can get a chance in a very different role.

I liked it. Helps that I also like Kate. Good story. Good acting. Acceptable plot escape clause at the end.

That was great, Crowe was perfect for that TBH. I don't get the Emma Watson 'thing' so she was just another character in it to me.

Emma does nothing for me, but my review of Noah was brutal. It seemed the writers went on strike halfway through and the producers plowed on ahead regardless.

Watched Moon the other night:

Pleasantly surprised. Well acted with thought provoking story.

I really enjoyed Moon, David Bowies son directed it well and Sam Rockwell was excellent as usual. If you liked that you might want to check out Oblivian.

Saw the last Hobbit film last night, I prefer this series to the lord of the rings. Particularly the last movie of the rings which I thought was really really bad.

Play Dirty, 1969, Michael Caine.

Probably the most cynical WW2 film I've seen (certainly from an allied nation). Not particularly entertaining, but watchable enough. The problem was that I never really cared about the characters, which stopped tension from building. Good ending.

6.5/10. Ripe for a remake.

Talked to a friend who works in the UK film industry (sound) on Saturday. The big talk is Ben Wheatley's adaptation of J.G. Ballard's High Rise. Lot of hype. Looking forward to Jeremy Irons in it.

Just saw The Hobbit : Battle of 5 Armies. What a great way to finish 14 years in Middle Earth. Loved the little behind the scenes before the movie started too, with interviews with all the main crew and cast from all 6 movies.

Not as long winded as Return of the King but the final battle was epic, saw it in 3D which definitely added to it.

Hard to saw which series i enjoyed more, LOTR or Hobbit. Probably best to just sit through them all in multiple re-viewings for years to come.

Edit: Also it was nice to see the new Star Wars teaser on the big screen, when the Millennium Falcon soars and you get the full on Star Wars theme the hairs on the back of your neck stand right up!

Should be sweet, pretty much action all the way through. And is also the shortest of all the Middle Earth movies.

Kill List.

Well, that was pretty fucked up stuff, in the tradition of the Wicker Man and other Brit occult flicks.

Very well made, good characters, and unhinged almost to the degree of an Argento film.

7.5/10

Finally saw Priest with Paul Bettany. That and Legion are films that are generally considered stinkers, but I didn't mind them. Was 90 minutes of comic-book entertainment

The Interview

Watched it yesterday and it's not worth the hype. Ignoring the overacting which I'm sure is deliberate, there are some funny bits, but it seems that Seth & Friends had more fun making it than I had watching it.

Like most of his more recent stuff then?

Watched Old boy and Pacific Rim over the past couple of days, both were pretty disappointing . While Pacific Rim has excellent levels of carnage the story line was weak and predictable even by monster movie standards. Old boy relied on wildly implausible coincidences and the fight scenes were cartoonish. Elisabeth Olsen is hot though [way hotter than her emaciated sisters] and Josh Brolin was pretty good as usual. Colin Firth was apparently the original choice for the lead role, I cannot picture him doing it at all.

About Time. Richard Curtis film with Rachel McAdams and Bill Nighy among others, so had high hopes, but was pretty disappointed. Those wicked one liners just weren't there, and the whole time travel thing was amusing in bits (like when the bloke jumps back a few times to ensure first night sex is the best) but kept changing all its rules and got rather dumb. And the actual story was a bit dull.

The Interview was typical Rogen. Not as bad as Neighbours shudder but no where as funny as "This is the End".
