Talked with a mate who has good knowledge of the EP problem. He was saying that under the current system the residents not only block the number of events, they can block any attempt to bowl the place and build houses. Something about the land being zoned for a stadium. It will take a big fuck you from local and maybe even central government to push it through

I know an Eden Park resident, park at their place for big games, and I think it's a myth that the 'residents' are anti events etc. There's a minority of stick in the muds but most residents knew what they were getting in for when they moved into the area.

They had a big shindig before the 2011 RWC at Eden Park where NZR/AKL council took them through everything that was going to happen etc and they had a bit of a meal and drinks etc.

Ok, lets test that and double the number of events at Eden Park and let them trade out of debt.

Of course I wasn't suggesting that they would be open to everything, a resident can still be pro Eden Park (or any events centre) while not supporting a stupid escalation of events. However, just vilifying all the residents off hand is stupid.

Also, what events do you propose are going to want to suddenly switch to Eden Park to satisfy this doubling?

Concerts, sports (like the Cricket that could play at night because of the lights, stuff live that. More rugby, more of everything.

You can't be pro Eden Park and not want it used enough to pay it's bills.

Just knock the fucker down and turn if into a bunch of old folks homes. Worked in NZs greatest city after all.

Read above. Current rules won't allow it without all of the residents approving zone changes and consents. In other words NUTS

There's a few that oppose it. Under the RMA, they have the right (and the means it appears) to challenge resource consents. So, basically, no late events at EP until either the Unitary Plan changes (not happening), or everyone locally rolls over.

Note that EP tried to get 6 late events a year when the Unitary Plan rolled out. They failed, so each one now needs a RC application -w hich costs a pile of money, and has no guarantee of success. Basically, they are farked.

Who cares? Enough oppose it that it's just sematics to point out a minority of non-wowsers.

I don't believe your claim it's a majority, I also don't think your comments on how many extra events could be scheduled is realistic - where are these new rugby games going to come from?

Fair enough, but wouldn't Western Springs and it's more natural amphitheatre be a better venue still for concerts?

Yes. In my view EP is a lost cause and should be chopped up and developed to help fund development of a site that can host all rugby codes, football and outdoor concerts. Any red tape that stops this from happening should be swept aside. The waterfront stadium has too many ifs, and the port is not willing. I would develop Mt Smart and all the infrastructure around it to make the journey to and from as easy as possible, to offset the downside of not being in the city centre. Besides, it's not that far out

So how farking terrible is our planning that we invest 200M dollars in it ten years ago, can't manage a concourse aroudn the ground, can't develop the outer oval as a test venue, and now think we'll just bulldoze it?

    Shameful.

There are heaps of examples of poor urban planning in NZ and Auckland since we're talking about it. Planners have no long term vision and in terms of stadiums means we have a bunch of stadia not fit for purpose when one outstanding one would do

Well obviously the logical outcome is to put a 50,000 seat covered "National Stadium" in the Christchurch CBD.

That's cute. You guys can't even get a 35,000 stadium organised or get 15,000 to a Super Rugby semi final game.

15,000 is a full house on the scaffolding at AMI Addington, plus I didn't think you'd really want to compare "getting things organised" in this context considering the circumstances...

@nzzp let's now just wait and see where Auckland's issues go without government intervention, cos look how fucking awesome it's gone so far - if the govt had it's way we would have had the 2011 WC final in a brand-new waterfront stadium.

hey, i was there for the 2010 ITM cup final. Lucky to get 2,000 people there; weather was a bit misty, but a really poor turnout.

Also, politics in Auckland was farked. Still is, but at least you don't have one council declining 'free' stadia from the Govt because it interferes with their patch.

    Classic.

Let's get all of your strawmen along to Eden Park when Auckland is facing a foregone conclusion treble ITM semi final and compare it to Super Rugby. Oh, hang on.

Also, let's just compare and contrast the free waterfront stadium you were offered to the shortfall in funding for the CBD stadium that is now funded and will now get built...
