Jeez TR, it's so sad what they've done to Helena Bay. We used to go up there when we were kids and stay in one of the baches. Fresh milk from the dairy farm up the road, swimming in the creek behind the baches, bliss. All gone now though, looks like the creek is even gone.

Yeah alot of those areas are being bought up and houses built..I grew up camping at Oakura, the housing part is barely recognizable...even places that have always been popular are getting worse, like Langs, you are looking at upwards of 450k for a 1/4 acre section.

The Chinese have bought Carrington and have huge plans for the area....
-

Same everywhere though.

When I was at uni I used to go to Hahei over a gravel road. There were only about 20 baches and once you walked to Cathedral Cove you were pretty much guaranteed not to see another person all day.

We are still lucky in NZ that a range of breathtaking beaches, lakes and mountains are still easily accessible and by global standards - deserted.

Even from Akl I can jump on the boat and pretty much guarantee mooring in a piece of paradise within a couple of hours and except for 6 weeks of the year there will only be a couple of other boats in sight.

Its one of the main reasons I live here. Can't really blame others for thinking the same way.
-
In case you're ever on Sydney looking for a good beer:

http://concreteplayground.com/sydney/food-drink/drink/the-ten-best-craft-beer-bars-and-pubs-in-sydney/

I've been to a few of these (a couple of them with other Ferners) and can vouch for the excellence. -

Best I ever did 30 cans of Lion Red in a 12 hour period when I was about 22 in the hot sun on NY Eve at Paihia while playing volleyball, swimming and impressing chicks (and before any smart arse comments, I musta been doing somethign right that day...)

at the oktoberfest, after many years of, er, losing my bearings shortly after dusk, the pace I found that kept me upright was 1 stein an hour. Doesnt sound like much (cause at the start, the first stein is typically gone in under 20 minutes) but I found if I paced myself, I could get through 12 steins and still be upright and coherent. slow and steady finishes the race.
-

Concrete playground is good on Akl as well Their top 10's are always interesting and they seem to give a more interesting "whats on" guide. Well worth signing up for their e=shots IMO
-

You're all talk. A couple of weeks ago you stayed about 5 minutes walk from at least half a dozen of the best craft beer bars in NZ and apparently visited none. [emoji12] -

At least four of those pubs are within walking distance of my place and the one in Newtown I've been into ... but only to use their loo.
-
