Napier 1st XV line-up for the Final is the same as for the Semi-Final.
Game will be live on the Rugby Channel from 2.00pm (k/o 2.10pm).

Yesterday was so good, winning the Battle of the Bays.
Today not so good, with the U19s absolutely smashed and Napier just missing out on the win in the Top 4. Still a great season, of course, with a one point loss in the Super 8 Final, Hurricanes Champions and a 3 point loss in the Top 4 Final, but they'll be gutted.

Looking forward to seeing more from players like Tyrone Thompson, Leo Thompson, Patrick Teddy, Luke Russel, Keegan Christian-Goss and Jayden Stok.

And, obviously, also some talented players from the Hastings 1st XV squad, captain Liam Udy-Johns in particular.

I've just read that Hamilton BHS beat Napier BHS 19-15 in the U15 final.

Sign New Zealand Secondary Schools rugby team hooker Tyrone Thompson now!

That's the advice from Thompson's Napier Boys' High School 1st XV mentor Brendon Ratcliffe to Hawke's Bay Magpies coach Mark Ozich in the wake of Thompson's selection in the national team at the weekend.

Thompson is the sole Hawke's Bay player in the New Zealand side that will play Tonga Schools in Brisbane on Thursday, the Australian Schools Barbarians in Brisbane on Monday and the Australian Schools in Brisbane on October 6.

"I picked Israel Dagg out of Lindisfarne College for the Magpies in 2006. I know it's unusual to pick a forward for a Mitre 10 Cup team while still at school but Tyrone is that good ... he has the size and mentality required. With the injury concerns the Magpies have at hooker Tyrone could be useful to the squad when he returns from Aussie," Ratcliffe said.

He pointed out Thompson is already taller than All Blacks hooker Codie Taylor and only 2kg lighter at 106kgs.

Ratcliffe confirmed the Hurricanes, Chiefs and Crusaders franchises are showing interest in Thompson, who captained NBHS to second place at the National Top Four tournament in Palmerston North earlier this month.

Thompson, 18, said he intends to use the Brisbane trip to enhance his value before making a final decision on his base for next year.

    .

    About Josh Gimblett

"Josh is more a lock than a six and this was his first full season at six. He is not a flash player but he has the backbone and engine you build a team around. He can hit 36 rucks in a game but doesn't make a song and dance about it ... he is the Andy Earl or Todd Blackadder-type of player. He has a massive future and is considering options in Wellington and Canterbury," Ratcliffe explained.

    .

    About Patrick Teddy

Ratcliffe heaped kudos on Teddy for the manner in which he made a successful transition from hooker to tighthead prop this season.

"This is his first year as a tighthead. He did it for the good of the team and is now one of the top three tightheads in New Zealand Secondary Schools rugby. This versatility will help him in the future."

Ratcliffe pointed out Teddy has a couple of playing options for next year to consider and is also hoping to do a building apprenticeship.

Results from the U15 Condor Sevens from day 1:

    Hastings Girls HS 20 - 7 Inglewood High (HT: 5 - 7)
Hastings Girls HS 30 - 0 Takapuna Grammar
Hastings Girls HS 15 - 5 Kerikeri HS

    Hastings Boys HS 22 - 5 New Plymouth Boys HS (HT: 17 - 5)
Hastings Boys HS 24 - 5 Howick College
Hastings Boys HS 24 - 5 Macleans College

They haven't posted the updated draw for the finals yet, but if I'm correct:

Hastings Girls will play Kerikeri HS again in the Cup QF (9.40am), and
Hasting Boys will take on MAGs in the Cup QF (11.40am).

The Condor 7s (U15 and non-televised games of the Open boys & girls tournament) are livestreamed on the https://www.sidelineapp.com/ app. ($9.95 for the whole tournament). The games are also available on demand.

By the way, I haven't seen any squad lists, but the U15 Hastings Boys' playmaker is Cooper Flanders, Devan's little brother, and he's pretty good!

Yesterday's remaining results from the Condor Sevens U15 Tournament:

    Cup QF:
Hastings Girls HS 15 - 12 Kerikeri HS
Hastings Boys HS 19 - 15 Mt Albert Grammar

    Cup SF:
Hastings Girls HS 5 - 44 Lytton HS
Hastings Boys HS 5 - 19 Rotorua Boys HS

Today is day 1 of the open division, with Napier BHS and Hastings BHS competing.

Just watched the first game of both teams, and the officiating was terrible, esp in the Napier game. I have no doubt it cost them the game. The ref had no clue and was just watching each time the Napier boys held up a player and he just let it continue instead of calling a maul. They were so much stronger, and it was so obvious. No arms tackle against Patrick Teddy when he was going for the try line; high tackles; offsides; all not penalised. The commentator noticed it, too. St Peter's just scored off rare breaks; Napier Boys were by far the dominant team (many players from their 1st XV playing, including the Thompson twins, Teddy, Stok, Christian-Goss etc). Saw the same thing yesterday in the U15 Hastings QF game bad officiating (which they still won despite the ref).

    Results:
    Hastings Boys 29 - 12 Otago Boys
    Napier Boys 17 - 26 St Peter's Coll

    Result:
    Napier BHS 24 - 22 Westlake BHS

Apparently, Westlake was leading 17 - 0 at some point. It looks like it took Napier some time to get into the game, or had great impact from the bench. Or Westlake imploded. Or both.

Playing halfback for St Kentigern's this year is Treyah Kingi-Taukamo.

He is one of the six "imports" that have been identified as part of the charges late last year/this year against St Kentigern's.

In 2018 he was at Napier BHS and played for the HB Under 16 team that won the Hurricanes title. In 2017 he played for the HB Under 14 team.

I just checked the draw of the Central North Island competition that starts next week. Te Aute is no longer in it. On the one hand, that's a good thing because they lost every single game the last few years and aren't good enough to compete with the other schools. On the other hand it's also sad to see them lose the opportunity to get better and improve by playing in this comp.

Lindisfarne and St John's Hastings are still part of the CNI.

Yes, that is sad for Te Aute College.

In the late 1970's and again about 1983/84 they held the Moascar Cup.

Looking at those results it looks like either the Wellington Schools have improved (or got their scholarship allocations a bit more accurate in one case) a bit or perhaps our guys are not quite as dominant as last year.
