nilsson's is a tragic story fucking managers eh

It's the curse of "Without You". The two original Badfinger members who wrote it (Pete Ham and Tom Evans) both hung themselves after being royally screwed over by their manager, Stan Polley, and then other members of the group. They hardly saw a penny of the royalties, and Polley famously used to take 75% or more of their income as "commission" without disclosing it to them. The court cases to sort out the actual royalties that were due weren't done until about 18 months ago and nearly 40 years after their deaths Evans and Ham are now very rich.

Then Nilsson had a heart attack due to the stress of having to constantly fend off creditors including the IRS after his financial manager Cindy Sims stole his (and others') money.

Finally Mariah Carey's histrionic version made her famous but didn't prevent her remaining a talentless, shrill harpy.
-

I haven't seen it yet, but this doc from a year and a half ago is on my want-list:

A decent bio of Nilsson came out a year or so ago. Nilsson: The life of a singer-songwriter by Alyn Shipton. Hugely expensive but I eventually got it on Kindle for about 10 bucks. BTW I got to know Alyn Shipton through a bio of Cab Calloway he did a while ago. Well worth a read if you can get hold of it; amazing what black musicians had to put up with not that long ago, they could be rolling in money and still get treated like shit.

Copped a bit of flak early on for sounding like Ghostface (Wu Tang). But he's a talent and his 'Fuck that's delicious' series is mint, even has a couple of episodes from his NZ trip.
-

Not sure if this should be in the TV thread or the music one but somehow, until this morning, this excellent music doco about Soul Train and it's influence on black culture and society had passed me by.

from some searching, it looks like it was made in 2010 but slipped under the radar (hardly a mention in IMDB) and was re-shown only earlier this year.

Sky seems to show lots of other VH1 docos on Prime but tends to annually regurgitate the same old 'Classic Rock' ones which is a pity as it looks like there are plenty of really good ones done around other musical genres and aspects of popular culture

I won't post the clip, as it is an hour long, but this youtube link is a good quality copy.

My nephew's a struggling musician - this is his new video. I think part of it was paid for from an NZ on Air grant, so you should watch it to get value for your tax dollars. :)

This one he wrote as the theme for the Auckland leg of the Volvo round the World yacht race - won a competition to write the theme song.
