Why didn't it work?

Replace Jewish girls with Maori girls. Would you have found that offensive? Or is that perfectly acceptable if you're part Maori?

Firstly, as I said above if you follow the thread timeline you had thrown out that 'double standard' line before I had even commented on on that tweet - had you somehow read my mind or were you pre-white knighting?

These were your comments before my post:

No doubt it also wouldn't be an issue if a white comedian said the same thing about black girls?

What is your point? This is clearly an issue, which is why these articles are being written about it.

Double standard much?

What double standard were you meaning at this stage?

Secondly, I said that comment wasn't antisemitic, I didn't say it wasn't offensive. Although it's probably less offensive than if he'd said they go down as quick as the other players.

I've only just caught up and read the tweets that are meant to be so offensive.

FFS the guy is a comedian. Some of his jokes are going to miss the mark by going a touch too far, some will miss by not reaching it. Some will hit the sweet spot and be really funny. Generally from what I've seen he does pretty well.

The whole premise of that style of comedy is to take a stereotype or assumption about a group of people, be it because of race, size, intelligence, whatever, and make fun of it. The targets themselves usually see the joke in the elements of truth. "Yep, that's us. That's what we are known for". There are boundaries though. Crime victims, the disadvantaged that can't answer back or have no choice in the things being laughed at, certain crimes etc etc

Then there are perceived boundaries. Areas where you aren't supposed to go because those people are too sensitive or see any joke about them as an attack. I'll say it. The outspoken parts of the Jewish community can be like that. Any joke that touches on them on even alludes to then, becomes 'Anti-Semetic'. FFS, if a joke is made about Israel's foreign policy that does not mean the joke maker is inciting hatred to the religious group that is the majority of that population! The joke about the BMW and the jewish kid crossing the road is not anti-semetic. If anything it is a way of keeping an important part of our past history in people's minds. If anyone should be offended by that joke it is Germans as they all get tarred with the brush of Nazi-ism.

Fat girl jokes? The abound the world over, just at fat man jokes, useless around the house man jokes, wives that withhold sex jokes, jokes about skinny people etc etc. For every time I have laughed at a joke about someone different to me, somewhere else someone is saying a joke that pokes fun at someone like me.

Anyone that takes offence at a joke that hasn't crossed real boundaries of decency should shut the fuck up or never laugh at anyone else ever again.

Nepia: You and El Toro were rather vocal in the other thread about offensive language being punished. Your initial response to this was basically move along nothing to see here. That and blame the "ringwingers" at Salon. That was the double standard I was referring to. You cant have it both ways.

Totally agree, but that's the world we now live in. I doubt Comedy Channel would touch South Park with a barge pole if they pitched it today.

Thing with Trevor is he managed to do what so many others failed……he got us to laugh at ourselves. For years we had great stand-up guys in SA like Barry Hilton etc. that were great in their own right but they could’nt really cross over into other local cultures without offending them in some way. And then Trevor appeared and he disarmed everybody with his wit and insight and for the first time we managed to see how we appear from the other guys perspective….and it was hilarious. He crossed the bridge in such a big way and he now has the most amazing diverse following of all South Africans of which there are about nine different black cultures and languages…….whites including Afrikaners, English and Jewish……coloureds ( mix race) which includes a huge Muslim and Christian background….as well as South African Indians which includes a Muslim and Hindu background. He spares absolutely no-one in his brilliant impersonations including the politicians which again is amazing and healthy given the history of African politics. Bottomline….don’t go and watch his show if you have a chip on your shoulder…..although in many cases he managed to knock the chip right off and saved you from your own misery!
Fuck knows if this approach will work in the States? I can see that some people will be offended by the (old) tweets and he probably regrets ever sending them……they certainly don’t work outside the context of the guy we know.
Ironically Fox news called him a BLACK South African in one of their video-wind ups! I think he will be over the moon with that!

I hear you RS but I think there is a difference between insulting someone on a rugby field in a game broadcast across the nation..... and political satire where you normally choose to go and listen to a show or follow somebodies twitter feed.....

BTW...I think the tweets were stupid and off the mark........unnecessary and in no way a reflection of what he represents....bad judgement on his part.

Rancid, why do you keep obscuring the timeline of this discussion and therefore put words into my mouth?

At no stage did I make any mention of right wingers and Salon. I only realised the original link I had read was from Salon after reading your post.

Go back and read my comments before your first double standard post. I commented on only two jokes that he made neither of them were to do with Jewish women and as I've said repeatedly I don't think those two were antisemitic. That was all the comment I made until calling you on your white comedian comment.

If you want to carry on your poor white men shtick then go ahead but if you're going to suggest that Noah gets more leeway than a white comedian you're going to get called on it because this clearly is an 'issue' (which is why both the left and right media in the US are commenting on it.

Nepia did you even read what I wrote?

But simple question to clear this up. Do you think what he wrote was offensive and do you think he should be JacPotted for it?

And, yes while this may be an issue now it will no doubt blow over now that Trevor has been suitably chastised by his moral betters. I question whether a white comedian would even get a second chance.

It's a pretty simple question. If I'm wrong then call me up on it. No big deal.

Whatever the case, it will be interesting to see how he goes. I have a feeling he might do a Piers Morgan but we'll have to wait and see.
The black guy that has been following them since Ep1 finally caught up...

Glen shoulda killed that twat!

Thought it was an odd thing for them to be all anti-Rick and then Deana tell him to kill the wife beater so quickly...although with Rick angling for his wife, maybe it shouldnt be such a surprise.

I guess th ebiggest things were the black dude finally showing up and this new Wolf gang...not sure what thier end game is, I mean setting those traps? What is the point? It isnt like they can train zombies or doing anything other than trap them??
Unlike you and Rembrandt I really liked this (half) series, with the coda that the writers still do as many dippy things as they always do, I liked how there was something different from the good humans/bad humans of the past few series. I found it a lot more thrilling than previous serious wondering what was going on and where things were leading.

The finale:
Sheesh, at one stage in that finale it looked like the priest, Tara, and Glenn were all going to die and I was beginning to worry the The Walking Dead just hates minorities (especially after Cutty and Noah's deaths) unless they're bad ass black women.

I should have known that Noah had to go as I knew that Morgan comes back this series. He might turn around and walk out again after seeing Rick pop that guy. Pretty rough doing it in front of the guys wife - even battered women sometimes feel love for their partners.

What did annoy me was just how clueless the townspeople are - in reality they would have been rolled by the US equivalent of Bulldogs league fans years ago. But as I said, The Walking Dead writers are sometimes stupid.

Looks like the next battle is up against the Wolf Pack, I hope there's more of them than just those two, otherwise it will be a short season. At any rate only on The Waking Dead would someone as on to it as Daryl just wander into that cannery, check out the dangling cans, and then just open a bloody truck without scoping the place and at the least bang on the sides of the truck.

Looking forward to the next half season to see how it plays out.
Apparently The Walking Dead is rating better than most broadcast network shows.

AMC has been on a great run really, a critical hit in Mad Men, a critical and relative ratings hit in Breaking Bad, and a gigantic ratings hit in The Walking Dead. Not bad for a station that was the second rate classic movies channel in the states originally.

I thought S3 was about as good as S1 and S2. It's an ok show designed to be more than an ok show. Now that he's president it makes comparisons with The West Wing inevitable and it really doesn't come close to that show in terms of quality.
