@jegga that was interesting. Obviously the guy feels strongly about the issue of homelessness and I don't think his idea was bad at all.

It would be interesting to see what the long-term effectiveness of the LA City Council's plan against places like Portland (mentioned in the clip) for homeless people. They're up against a fairly brutal national psyche on "hard work = success" which doesn't always take into account circumstances.

I thought it was a great idea , things like the ability to charge a phone, have an address and lock up your stuff during the day would be huge to homeless person and really help their chances of finding work.

I’m not 100% about the national psyche part , George Bush had a pretty incredible legacy regarding the homeless

@jegga some important stats there, and I'm not looking at any particular administration, but rather the projection of the USA as a hard environment for those who fall on misfortune, without having a fortune to get them out.

Would be interesting to see if those drops in homelessness have continued or even stabilised beyond that 2013 article.

That guy proposed micro homes to a crowdfund and raised $120K to get started - which is amazing given there was no product at the end of it and nothing except good vibes for the donor. How many of those donors would have otherwise given to such a cause? Especially if it was the government asking...

I look at the USA and think how glad I am to live in Australia, though our homeless rate is fairly high by comparison to the US

(EDIT: note the stated rate of homeless in stated the US is 0.17% but in Australia, based on ~105,000 per night being classified as "homeless", we are closer to 0.4%)

I understand you have to be super careful about cross country comparisons. They measure it differently and can be significant.

@nzzp Hence the quotes - I am led to believe from a quick read that the standard for "homeless" doesn't exist.

"It's not an exaggeration to say that Lawrence Mabey, from Palmerston North, was one of a select group of airmen who helped to win World War II" Yes it fucking well is an exaggeration FFS - great story but the 'Hitler changed the pattern of bombing because of the bombing of Berlin' myth has been well and truly debunked, along with the fact he was the gunner on one bomber. Not taking away from the guy and his crew, and comrades. But stuff like this makes people not respect real history unless it is over the top sensationalised - not that a gunner (who was an ace - gunners rarely did anything but put fighters off their aim) then flew a damaged plane to land on his own after his crew had bailed in anyway needs to be sensationalised - cos it's fucking amazing!
