The documentary above doesn't touch it, but until I see results of a paternity test on the Maury Povich Show that proves differently, my bet is on THIS GUY...

I was looking for it for weeks, and youtube was spammed with hundreds of fake versions - made me wonder if CoS was ratfucking. Finally found a real one (linked) and wondered how long it would stay up, figuring both HBO and Scientology would get it pulled. So, try to watch or download while it's up. It's eye-popping.
 
The doc will not be televised internationally for a while, and in fact the book it's based on still has not been published in Canada (3 years and waiting), and I believe it was not published in NZ either. American publishers are no longer cowed by fear of litigation. The internet, Anonymous, South Park and Katie Holmes have done their part, but this doc could be the tipping-point that brings down the Church.

Not likely. I have yet to watch the doco but the Scientologists have already laid out their rebuttals and it's easy to sound like you are being picked on if you can claim a doco isn't even handed. The are an incredibly litigious bunch with huge resources and have a well planned out strategy of survival.
One clever way (done by many more credible religions as well) is to run and maintain some good community works by well meaning devotees that are kept at arms length from the weird shit so they can be beacons that show how good and harmless they are.

Hasn't been published in the UK either. The doco was definitely worth a watch.

One thing the documentary doesn't detail, but continues to fascinate me, is that some of those very-high ranking ex-Scientology members interviewed -- e.g. Marty Rathbun (the Michael Jordan/Wayne Gretzky of auditing) and Mike Rinder (the Australian attack-dog) -- were "routed out" (purged) from the Church, but they still continue to believe in Scientology, including the crazy Xenu myth and their lives as Operating Thetans. The Church calls them "Squirrels." These squirrels believe the Church is a cult, they believe David Miscavige (Chairman of the Board and the guy Tom Cruise worships as a god) is corrupt and evil, but they still believe in Hubbard and (presumably) the e-meter.

Interesting watch and even if you tried to invent and imagine some viable balance into it, it shows that CoS is no more than a business model based on the ideas of a 'nutter' and run by control freaks.
How this really differs from many other current organised religions seems partly that it is new (in relative terms) and is still in a phase of cementing itself and its use of celebrities places it in the public eye.
Its teachings are looney and its methods extreme but go back a few centuries and you could apply the same to the Roman Catholics extremes used to forcibly convert other 'christian' beliefs of a more base and pagan root in order to build power. Many of these other groups (such as Cathars) had simple belief systems that promoted good over evil but didn't try and control their adherents or build wealth. It was hippies vs businessmen with the businessmen winning by methods of genocide and terror.
The fact from the doco they stuck with me was right at the end and that was the low numbers of practicing Scientologists. It seems it is their wealth and attachment to big names that gets them so much attention.
As long as we have organised religion and people seeing the opportunity to control others through it, we will have extremes that cause harm.
The sooner we get away from the concept of Religions being an entity that deserve tax free status the better. If it is due to their acts of public good then make just those activities tax free. The wealth building and business parts can pay their way like everyone else.
I'm not sure if it is still true but for a very long time the Anglican Church in NZ was the country's largest real estate owner. Their property wealth is huge and they don't pay a cent in tax. They even argued, when an even tax system on investment funds was introduced, that their pension fund should not pay tax. That has nothing to do with public good, just lining pockets. When I hear them crying for help to rebuild the ChCh Cathedral it just falls on deaf ears. The can easily afford to rebuild something twice as grand if they opened their purse.

Yeah I was surprised they didn't cover that in the documentary. Rinder mentions aspects of Scientology that "makes sense" and emphasises the difference between the Scientology and the CoS on his blog

I bumped into his blog when searching for info on the building in Auckland they've sunken so much cash into ($10 million for the initial purchase plus $16 million to do it up... but the site is currently a mess)
