I hadn't heard about this before. I think it's interesting.

New weight restricted 1R premier grade launched in Auckland schools

Auckland Rugby has launched a new premier level weight restricted competition in secondary schools to create room for even more players to flourish. The new 1R grade will extend pathways for young superstars that might have been lost within the open grades.

    .

This is from the Auckland Rugby website:

Secondary Schools Rugby kicks-off for 2019 with greater opportunities and pathways available to players

Anyone know exactly how/why manurewa has ended up in the north harbour comp for this year?

I can only assume it’s due to them being too shit for Auckland (Westlake beat them 53 nil) but must be a more accurate reason?

Full results for round 2 of north harbour

    Westlake 53 v Manurewa 0
    Whangarei 28 v Rosmini 10
    Orewa 27 v Massey 10
    Rangitoto 17 v Takapuna 14

Good win for whangarei there and orewa over Massey too. Takapuna with two losses already, more than they had all regular season last year

@JK yeah I think the benefit of playing in that comp is slowly starting to show for WBHS after copping some big hidings in the early years, they got a few boys playing U14s this seaosn who I expect will be playing 1st 15 in the next year or so...still would suck having that much travel, I mean Whangarei-Manurewa is a bit of a hike for a rugby game.

Manurewa are the second best team behind Wesley in Counties. With Wesley in CNI, they must be looking for meaningful competition. Auckland has never let outside Ist XV's in their main comp. North Harbour and Counties teams sometimes play in the lower grade comps. My old school Onewhero Area School played in a U14 comp last year.

Counties Manukau doesn't have a true first XV comp this year.

Alfriston College, Pukekohe High School, Rosehill College, Papakura High School are all in Auckland's 1st XV 1C grade.

The Highest grade in Counties is called 2nd XV with James Cook, Waiuku, Tuakau and AGS Strathallan and second and third XV teams from the other schools.

About the Super 8 competition (from a BOP/Chiefs perspective). Terrible webcoding, but you'll be able to read it.

Played at Evans Bay Park in Kiilbirnie earlier this afternoon.

    St. Particks College Kilbirnie 22
    Wellington College 17

Close on the scoreboard but not really when watching the match live. The home side looked to always have the upperhand although having said that most of the play was between the 22 metre lines just mainly on the Wellington College side of the halfway. Wellington led 17 - 10 at halftime (a converted try to St. Pats right on the break) but never really looked likely in the second half until right on full time when they ran the ball out from pretty much their own goal line and got to about the St Pats 22 before a defender chopped a Well Coll player down high and earned himself a yellow card. Well Coll had a couple of surges toward the try line but eventually got pinged for holding onto the ball for too long about six metres short and that was it. A deserved win to the home team.
