Take the Greg Chappell example. The underarm even had PMs from both sides essentially calling him and the team cowards. How is he regarded in Oz and the cricketing world now? I noticed that Pakistani bowler who was banned for two years for being involved in spot betting is back in the team. The comms don't go on about how he is a dirty cheat and the crowd didn't seem to let him have it that I recall. Part of the problem is that he was such a very good player, and so the behaviour coming from him has even harsher repercussions than if he was the young guy that did the deed and had the sugar in his pocket (Bancroft?). I think all of it blows over eventually
Greg Chappell is regarded as a batting legend ( rightfully so ) who also cheated ( again rightfully so ).
Based on that not sure if he's in the Border, S Waugh, Ponting pantheon. @NTA thoughts on this ?
Smith may retire with a test average over 60 which puts him in his own bracket of modern day greats but the cheating shit will ALWAYS be mentioned with him I suspect.

Greg Chappell wasn't cheating - underarm was well within the bounds of the law. I'm invoking what I call the Ruchie McCaw clause here, so line up and take it in turns to suck it

Broad edged the ball and didn't walk, so is that the defining moment of his career? Certainly he got the booing of a lifetime from Aussie fans. Overall he'll be remembered for that well behind some of his amazing spells that won Ashes matches.

If Smith is part of a team that wins this CWC, for some it won't matter. For me, I won't care. He did the crime, did the time. Boo him if you like - I'm pretty sure it doesn't affect his play.

Plenty of actual fucking cheats out there who didn't get punished, like any Pakistani or Indian home umpire / administration in the 80s and 90s, as well as rugby refs across the globe prior to professionalism
So, overall, I think to remember Chappell and Smith in the same breath has a very slim relationship, but maybe that is the effect of time.
Certainly no kiwi will ever forget underarm.

On the Donald run out: Harsh to blame him, the ball barely trickled past the stumps at the non-striker's end, sensible to get back in your ground in that case.
On Greg Chappell: He abided by the rules as they were at the time - just as Broad did when he edged one to first slip and didn't walk.

I'm really enjoying the rain delays. We are so lucky to have Test Match Special being broadcast on Radio Sport and the wonderful discussions they have during the breaks in play. Wondeful way to pass the time awaiting the restart and brings back memories of the good times when we always had TMS broadcast live every time England played at home (or the MCC for away games) all those years ago.
