Isn't the reason that they don't need drivers including the ones that cross the country is that the drivers horizon is less than the margin required to stop the train? So even if the driver did see something way in the distance, they would be powerless to do anything?

Iron ore from 16 mines is delivered to ports in Dampier and Cape Lambert, with the trains already having travelled over 4.5 kilometres autonomously since they were first deployed last year.

    O for Awesome

@Machpants looks a giant mining blast. But a seriousl big one.

The weird thing is it only has 11 views on youtube. Private drone footage perhaps?

That and cost. Why pay drivers ~$240k for these types of outcomes?

He's from Palmy. "Bogan dickhead" is just needless extra words.

Reminds me of a sobering experience at Pucka many years ago doing a range recon with a mate in a troopy. We'd pulled over after doing a uie to inspect the map. Because of the drought we were sitting in a cloud of dust we'd made only to have a tank materialise in front of us and just miss as he went hard left. The following one went hard right through the bush. A couple of seconds earlier and it would've run straight over us and probably wouldn't have realised, simply thought they'd gone over a stump.

It was a slow, quiet drive back.
