    @Number-10 Kaifa in the backs??? I know he's been moving between 6 and 7, but this is something else!

    Udy-Johns was outstanding for Hastings last year; good to hear he's playing well in club rugby, too. I'm not sure whether we will have a good U19 squad this year and whether we have good candidates for next year's NZU20s, but he should be one of them. That is, if there's a new coach, because with Philpott, I don't expect anything anymore.

    Yeah, odd to see Kaifa in the backline. Apparently his 40 minutes stint was because he played all 80 minutes for the Magpies midweek v Manawatu, and there was nothing on the result for Clive - the semi-finalists had already been confirmed last week.

    NOB Marist beat Tamatea 133-7, even with the game being called off seven minutes early.

    @Stockcar86
    From my perspective I don’t think 18yr olds have enough club experience to play at NPC level ...constant injuries , mental health , entitlements ... let them evolve in their own time , thoughts ?

    @The-Observer swings and roundabouts.

    If you have a potential star player and they don't get a NPC contract, there is a chance they may move somewhere else that will offer them a contract.

    Also, I'd rather have an 18 year old apprenticing in a NPC side than that position taken by a 22-23 year old journeyman from another province who didn't secure a contract in their home province, just here to play NPC and not club rugby

    @The-Observer fine line. Zac made the Magpies first year out and was one of the best in the NPC that year. Izzy played in 7th form which I think was just to stop cricket trying to sign him (obviously he was good). His D at school was never his strength and think the jump to NPC at that age wouldn't have helped. Think much of his d got hidden over his career being at fullback/wong for Crusaders and The All Blacks. He was never bad but never great. More than made up for it in other areas.

    I haven't seen too many young guns get promoted and look out of place eg the hastings boys over the last few years. Thinking back over the years to Hika, Alby, Glen Horton, Tamifuna (not sure when Bucky was first selected). Agree would much rather home grown youngin get selected than Marvin Karawana...

    It's a bit unusual that he played no rep age-grade rugby in HB, but is reassuring to see that "unidentified" players through the schools can still make it.

    Maddison Trophy semi-finals tomorrow.

    Weather is forecast for a superb winter's day of 19 degrees.

    (1) NOB Marist v (4) Havelock North

    (2) Taradale v (3) Hastings RS

    You would expect NOB Marist to beat Havelock North (right, @Stockcar86 ?) but the Taradale v Hastings RS one should be a lot closer.

    Having watched all the clubs at least once this year, I reckon Taradale and Hastings RS have the two biggest forward packs in the comp.

    Agreed. I don't expect the villagers to get too close to NOBM, assuming not many injuries to key players, but the other game could go either way. I'll probably go watch the Taradale HRS game.

    Highlanders halfback Folau Fakatava will be used off the bench. Hastings manager James Rosenberg said the visitors have rewarded halfback Jayden Rihia, the team's top try scorer this season with 16, with a start. Rosenberg pointed out new Argentinian lock Lucas Albornoz, who has slotted in well, flats with props Josiah Tavita-Metcalfe and Aleki Vuki.

    "All three have been nagged by the flu this week and lost 15 to 20kgs between them. We're hoping they will be right by kick off."

    Can you say something about this match-up?

    Did Marino M-T play? Also, it has been a very long time since I saw his twin brother play; how do you rate Antonio? Is he a realistic Magpies prospect?
