    @Chester-Draws you have a higher estimation of Smith than I do. We were unhappy (ie the franchise) to lose Black but he hasn't amounted to much in his time at the Blues. I think Ioane is a rising star and has shown some real brilliance this season, so he's far more than just steady imo.

    There was also a reason why the Chiefs ended up with Debraceny starting ahead of MMac, as he was doing a better job and is a genuine longer term option for the team.

    As for availability, contracts are always coming up for renewal/review or ending around the world. I don't think the Canes should limit their search to NZ, as I'd agree the pickings are lean here. But that doesn't mean a better option than our currently signed crop of players is impossible to find. Whether we can foot the $$ to compete with other interested parties is another story.

    @Paekakboyz

    Smith was poor at first this year. Maybe he will come good at first but I doubt it. JGB is far too inconsistent but the rare times hes on form he can be VG . I'd still like Jordie to have a run at first if no one else is found
    the only time Smith looked any good this year was at FB vs the Blues.

      From a NZ depth POV it makes sense for Jordie to be given a shot at 10 if he stays, I don't think JGB or Smith will ever be AB quality 10s (happy to be proven wrong though). Then again Jordie may not have the temperament to play 10 at the top level either.

      Ridiculous that the Blues will have BB, Perofeta, Plummer and Black on their books next season.

        Disagree

        BB will miss at least 8-10 games for the Blues next year

        Perofeta is a #15 who can cover 10 Replaces Nanai

        Black is a Mitre Cup player at best No business starting in Super Rugby

        Plummer needs ALOT of work Has a good frame Stick him at 12 and see how he goes

        Blues have a bunch of players but not alot of high level #10 performances in SR beyond BB

          @canefan maybe the board all took a voluntary paycut due to thier shit performance over the past decade? 🤣

          Not sure Jordie is a good fit for the Blues.

            @Stockcar86 to be fair to the bloke the All Black selectors should have more nous to know he isn't a winger. I mean why would you have the guy on the flank and then not even kick to him - makes no sense whatsoever. He really needs to break the mould of being Mr Fix it and actually focus on nailing down one position.

                @Canes4life

                I actually think the best thing he can do is go to the Crusaders, play at 12 consistently and get a combo with Goodhue.
                Hate to see him leave the Canes though. Unless he just wants to play fullback, then just let him play there and stop moving him around.

                  Jordie Barrett will remain in Hurricanes colours after announcing today he had signed with the club until 2022.

                  Barrett said the decision to stay at the Hurricanes was made easier by the fact he believed the club was in a really strong position at the moment and has great potential for the next few years.

                  "There is a really good mix of youth as well as experienced leaders in the squad and I feel like this is the best place to develop my game," he said.

                  "Staying in New Zealand rugby is really important to me. I'm enjoying playing alongside my mates, and I've got further aspirations and goals I want to reach while I'm playing in New Zealand."

                  Barrett said he still has a strong desire to play Super Rugby alongside his brothers at some point of his career but when that would happen remains unclear.

                    Well that press release glosses over the franchise movement clause after 2020. So it's wishful thinking that he'll be with us for 2021-2022. Don't blame the Canes for how they've presented it as it's technically true. But don't think he'll stick with us and there is zero chance of Scott joining the Canes to keep at least two of the bros together.

                    Unless.... do they have other siblings coming through!!?

                        @Machpants There's another brother, Blake (older than Jordie, but IIRC younger than Scott), but I don't think he'll ever come near SR. He has been named in the Taranaki Development squad.

                              @Winger Yeah IWL is our last big signing, without stating the obvious need to chase an experienced first five.

                              I think with all the weapons we have available I don't think the Canes need someone flashy at 10. Ideally someone that has the ability to put others in space and doesn't kick it away every time he gets the ball.

                                It will also be ideal if we can snap up an experienced loosehead as I'm not sure if Toby Smith will re-sign.

                                At the moment our best side for me would be (with ? in a few positions that I'm unsure about):

                                1. ? 2. Coles 3. Lomax 4. Blackwell 5. Walker-Leawere (not yet confirmed) 6. Fifita 7. Savea 8. Evans 9. Perenara 10. ? 11. Goosen 12. Laumape 13. Umaga-Jensen 14. Aso 15. Barrett 16. Aumua 17. Numia 18. Fidow 19. Scrafton 20. Flanders/Kirifi 21. ? 22. ? 23. Toala

                                  Still this fixation with James Blackwell and no mention of Kane Leaupepe in the 23. Is he no longer on the payroll?

                                      @Higgins oh yes I forgot about Leaupepe. No fixation mate, I'm one of those that were actually against him being one of our locks because of his height and I still do. I just think that's most likely the team Plumtree will look to in the bigger games. To be fair to Blackwell his workload last year was impressive.

                                        The Hurricanes have ruled out a Wellington return for former All Blacks Aaron Cruden or Lima Sopoaga, as they search far and wide to find a replacement for Blues-bound Beauden Barrett.

                                        With Barrett's new NZR contract seeing him trade Wellington for Auckland heading into the 2020 season, the Hurricanes are without a senior first-five on their roster.

                                        At the moment, youngster Fletcher Smith and journeyman Jackson Garden-Bachop are the only two specialist number 10s on the Hurricanes books, however CEO Avan Lee was happy to draw a line through the names of overseas Kiwi players to step in.

                                        Speaking to the NZ Herald, Lee ruled out moves for former Hurricanes Cruden (now with French side Montpellier), Sopoaga (England's Wasps) or Hayden Parker (Sunwolves).

                                          Good to confirm things but we don't sound much closer to snaffling an experienced 10 😞
