At long last! The first breakthrough (an LBW given on review) and the Sri Lanka's need just over 100. Wickets have fallen in clumps in this test, but you'd have to say Sri Lanka are warm favourites still.

A second wicket fell as well, so that's something at least. Agree that Sri Lanka are still warm favourites, especially as Dimuth Karunaratne has scored a good century.

Beyond warm now you'd have to say. I haven't watched much of this live, but looking through the cricinfo commentary it looks like there's been a mix of good batting, good luck and poor catching/stumping by us. The first two are beyond our control, but the third is really frustrating. We should win this series comfortably as even with the home advantage we're a much stronger side.

Looking back on our third innings, the top order (bar Latham), looks particularly poor, Kane and Ross especially. We probably should have score 350+ on this pitch.

Yep, our top order hasn't done the job in either innings. I enjoyed seeing Somerville do well with the bat, but it was also a bad sign more widely.

Got another one, but less than 50 runs required, so feels like too little, too late.

Any sign of the monsoon rains intervening this afternoon?

    Bugger

Thought that Dilmuth looked pretty calm even when we were squeaking a "that should do " lead of 250. Little did I know that he'd lead the chase no worries.

Well played Sri Lanka, that's a good win

I seriously thought we’d trouble Sri Lanka with them chasing 250+, got to hand it to them though and take a 1-0 lead in the series.

    Wondered why he wasn't playing:

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=12261108

"They won't have to deal with the spinner that destroyed their top order in the first innings of the first test, however, with Akila Dananjaya left out of Sri Lanka's side after he was reported for having a suspect bowling action in the first test.

He would still have been able to bowl in the second test before being required to undergo testing, but having already failed a biomechanic test once when his action was deemed to be illegal last December, Sri Lanka opted for the returning veteran Dilruwan Perera as their lead spin option."

A Sri Lankan with a suspect bowling action, who would have thought?

Really good hundred by Tom Latham - and still there at stumps.

Lots of turn for the SL spinners. Think Tom and BJ need to carry on with this tomorrow, because we could easily fall in a heap if either get out.

All hail Latham - without him our batting card is pretty bloody shite. King Kane hasn't been having a happy time there.

Him and BJ having to hold the fort. Better hang on and post a strong score

Boult's dropped catch off his own bowling will prove costly. de Silva scored another 100 runs, and in a low scoring game that's a lot.

Top effort from Latham and BJ to get us over their total with 6 wickets in hand. not enough time for a result I don't think, but still good work lads

Only chance is if we can go nuts and in this session, have a full day tomorrow and then the pitch play up.
