      Interesting ...

The frontrunning Ta$man Mako rugby team have landed a tour of the United States.

The current Mitre 10 Cup premiership leaders will play two games, against American Major League Rugby champions the Seattle Seawolves and the Houston SaberCats, in January next year.

The Ta$man team to travel to the States will be selected in October and will be made up of contracted Ta$man players who do not have Super contracts - as well as Ta$man B and U19 players.

All Black Tim Perry will be the tour captain for the trip.

While the tour was yet to be officially sanctioned by NZ Rugby, finer details had been organised in the last month between TRU and the Mako's Houston and Seattle hosts, before the itinerary was finally announced this week.

The Seawolves website acknowledged the Mako will "provide a dynamic test with their speed of play for the Seattle Seawolves heading into their third season and another chance to defend their title." The Seattle exhibition game will be played on January 26 at the Starfire Stadium.

As with many overseas rugby competitions, a number of New Zealanders ply their trade in the nine-team United States Major League competition - including current Mako squad member Tim O'Malley who played for the Utah Warriors last season.

I think a few teams already do this. Auckland had a mini tour of Australia during SR and last year I think they were in Asia

Tom Donnelly will take over from Ben Herring as Otago head coach from 2020. He has signed a 3-year contract.

                            🔴⚪️⚫️ Important Notice 🔴⚪️⚫️

Last week, Bart Hoggard resigned as the chief executive officer of Counties Manukau Rugby Union to return to the legal profession.

Bart has been the union’s CEO for two and a half years during which time he has facilitated the creation of a new five year strategic plan for Counties Manukau Rugby, assembled a great group of employees from the local community and turned around the financial profitability of the union through several successful initiatives (including hosting a Global Rapid Rugby game at Navigation Homes Stadium, a leadership masterclass breakfast with Kieran Read, a house build project with Franklin Hospice at Paerata Rise and an innovative corporate hospitality offering in a modified container on the half way line at Steelers home games).

Bart has also embraced the proud heritage of Counties Manukau Rugby, bringing back numbers on the front of the Steelers’ jerseys in his first year, acknowledging Jonah Lomu’s place in Counties folklore through the Jonah Lomu Memorial game last year, and celebrating the 40th anniversary of Counties winning the national provincial championship by hosting a reunion for the successful 1979 team before the Steelers first game this season.

Over the last year, there has been an increase in the number of registered rugby players within the Counties Manukau region which has been led by the growing popularity of women’s rugby. However, without doubt, rugby is at a crossroads and facing significant challenges. The platform that Bart has established over the last couple of years has set the union up so that it is well placed to deal with these challenges.

Craig Carter said “Bart has made a significant contribution to Counties Manukau Rugby and I am grateful for the commitment, passion and professionalism that he has applied at all times in driving the union forward. Bart has been a pleasure to work with and I am disappointed that he is leaving. Bart has left the union in a strong position."

Craig also noted that “Counties Manukau Rugby is very fortunate to have a number of loyal and generous partners whose unconditional support over a number of years has allowed the union to continue to grow and succeed.”

Bart’s last day at the union is 23 October and he will join the commercial property team of law firm, Simpson Western.

Sean Wainui cleared of dangerous tackle

Taranaki winger Sean Wainui has had his four-week suspension for a dangerous tackle overturned.

Wainui was initially handed a four-week suspension after he was cited for a dangerous tackle during his team’s unsuccessful challenge for the Ranfurly Shield against Otago on Sunday 8 September.

Wainui appealed his suspension and the New Zealand Rugby Appeal Council allowed the appeal, finding that the head contact was, on balance, accidental. This was with the benefit of additional evidence.

The Council reheard the matter in part including additional evidence from the match officials. The Council noted Wainui showed concern for the tackled player’s welfare.

The Council made it clear that dangerous tackles will continue to be treated seriously, but that on their review of the evidence, the actions of Wainui did not constitute a dangerous tackle or warranted any more than a Citing Commissioner warning.

Wainui has already missed Taranaki’s Mitre 10 Cup matches against Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay, but is now available for selection for their remaining three round robin matches.

Another close loss for East Coast in the local derby.

                                      Poverty Bay 24 - East Coast 20

@Bovidae Ah, I hoped they'd win this one. Only one game left, North Otago next week at home. Last v 2nd in the competition, I can't see them win that game, unless all flights are cancelled and North Otago have to travel by bus and ferry.

@Stargazer Guildford will be needing a chauffeur to get to East Coast games at the moment. Silly boy.
