BTW, just spotted that Peter Jackson's 'They that shall not grow old' with the restored film clips has been put on BBC iPlayer for those that have access.

It's on Netflix for Aussie based Ferners.

@Crucial I was wondering what prompted you posting that photo. I never went to Mesen but did visit Tyne Cot, Buttes, Polygon Wood and Nine Elms. There were a few other NZ-related memorials in the Passchendale region. I took plenty of photos.

Edit: I assume because of Armistice Day.

Yeah, was Armistice day related (posted at the 11th hour....). I am still in Europe mode so AD is more prevalent than it is in NZ where we tend to lump everything in with ANZAC Day.

Not a huge turn out in Whangarei, but still a hundred or so. Quite few attendees spaced around the edge of the green. A large number of Vietnam Vets there.

Ah, OK, that makes sense. I thought the statue looked like the one from down by the Grand Hotel. Glad they finally found something worthy to do with that area. Do you remember the embarrassment that was the glass fountain?

remind me? Bear in mind I am a little younger than you šŸ™‚

They get good turnout on ANZAC Day there nowadays, the whole carpark, grassed area in front and behind is usually full.

@taniwharugby It was a 3 metre tall thing with a couple of fin shaped glass things on the side. Water sometimes trickled down it. But not much and not very often. A hose with a finger over the end is much more spectacular.

Edit, found a picture. It was even more underwhelming in real life.

I don't recall it from my time in Whangarei either (1988-98)

This pic is the current location. The plaque is still there apparently

Yeah right in that crappy corner at the western end. It must have been built in the early 70s at a guess to general derision. We may have been a town full of bogans but we knew shit when we saw it.

@JC it would have been very late 70s early 80s when I was old enough to remember something as, er significant as that haha.

Very true. I got my Gulf War medal in the mail, was very pissed off!

Putting up with this sorta shit needs a bit more respect IMO! Not that it is a patch on what the WW2 guys went through

Shit mate, anyone who lays their life on the line for the sake of the rest of us at least deserves to get their medals presented in person

My ex-Father-in-Law had the same thing happen to him with his Oman medal - which he had to wait years to get. Was well pissed off.

    Lest We Forget.

There was something really special about last year's observation with the dawn vigil from your driveways.

    Might do that again.

My post is prompted by this Twitty thread by Jim Kayes (who I have never forgiven for that poor taste crack about Alingi on the first episode of The Press Box all those years ago, but makes a good point here and in the following posts):

Isn't there another thread? Sure the mods will join this up if necessary.

I do admit that I liked the driveway thing and will be putting the big poppy that we made back up tonight.

I don't want to lose the group show of support though so will probably still go up the road to dawn service.
