I'm in a weird funk with podcasts.

I can't listen to true crime ones anymore, I'm just over them.

American broadcast voices are grating on me, so while I really enjoy Business Wars (for example) I just can't handle the voice.

    @jegga said in Good podcasts:

I’ve been listening to timesuck, they are decent but I can’t listen to too many in a row .

I actually found this unlistenable. I don't mind a bit of comedy with my history but nothing this guy did was funny and his history wasn't focused enough to keep me interested. I struggle to believe he's an actual comedian. Maybe it's one you need to listen to from the first episode for the "jokes" to make sense.

I'm bascially just listening to a couple of film podcasts, British history podcast and the odd Freakonomics these days. Oh and I've started listening to the RNZ series Black Sheep random series.

Ah well I like them , his sense of humour is pretty fucked up though . His bit about squirrel finger puppets is probably an aquired taste too .

Brett Weinstein and his brother Eric have started their own separate podcasts , I think I prefer Brett’s but listening to Eric’s take on his one and only meeting with Epstein was good .

That was good. So, he's way funnier doing stand up than he is doing a history podcast.

Yeah his standup is pretty good imho .

It took me a few podcasts to get into his style . The one about the Austrian girl was really good I thought and the one about Mormons .

Martyr made is doing a series about Jim Jones . It’s pretty good imho , the first one about the social background of the time and the Latino racism towards blacks was something I hadn’t heard about before . The forming of Israel podcast he did was excellent.

Oh yeah Martyr Made is great. Haven't started the Jim Jones yet.

I might give Timesuck one more go since I found his stand up funny ...

Oh you obviously haven't got to the martyr made podcast he did about cannibalism and his pronunciation of polynesian words and names.

By the end I hated Teachers Pet. I was hate listening to it and wished I’d just read about the story.

What’s casefile? TBH Aussie broadcasting voice will probably annoy me as much as the American. 🤣

Yeah once I heard about teachers pet it had already been shut off from Aussie. Case file is a kind of crime stories one. I listened to a couple one on the founder of silk road.

Do you listen to gimblet medias podcast heavyweight it's sometimes good. The first one about the lost record that moby kept was good.

Espn 30for 30 podcast is good. Being an ex poker player i loved the queen of sorts episode.

I may have listened to casefile ... as I’ve definitely listed to a podcast about the silk row founders.

I didn’t realise you could no longer listen to Teachers Pet in Oz.

Will give the other two mentioned a listen.

Just wondering if it’s worth it.

@Nepia yeah I'm struggling to fond too many good ones at moment.

Even things like myths and legend ones, when told by a nasaly mono-tone Yank is a tough listen, even if the topic appeals...other awesome fact ones i have, but you have to search for a good one.

Following a podcast called Damn Interesting, and one ep was called 'it came from beneath the sea' which was about a Volcanic island that appeared off Sicily in 1863 and ownership was immediately claimed/disputed by 4 nations, only for it to disappear back into the sea under a year later.

@jegga I can't stand Gladwell anymore. He tries so hard to find some idiotic angle, he drives me nuts. His voice doesn't help either. The straw for me was when he tried to convince Bill Simmons that Nigeria was the greatest basketball player producing nation in history.

I think I may have mentioned Two Cents Worth before.

It's a collaboration between Newsroom and RNZ which takes a slightly irreverent look at topical financial / economic issues and makes them easily understandable in 20 minute bites.

Usually. However the latest episode is different in tone and I highly recommend it. It reports on the Mortgage Swaps issues that affected the farming sector around the GFC and basically pulls no punches as it goes after ANZ in particular. It's a quick summation and isn't aggressive but its bloody obvious what they think of the big banks and successive governments lackadaisical attempts to reign them in.

I found it quite moving. It touches on some amazing stories as it details tales of lives wrecked (and ended) by the greed of the banking community.

The Banks, the Swaps and the Suicide Box

The Banks, the Swaps and the Suicide Box

The disastrous impact of banks selling risky financial derivatives to farmers is still being felt in rural communities more than a decade later. How did it happen and how can we stop banks doing it again?

There’s a podcast about Dolly Parton from the this American life people, it’s pretty interesting to see how she’s viewed in the music industry and her influence.

@Bones theres a lot about your people in there . They trace a lot of music and it’s roots and influences from places you wouldn’t expect.
