What's the story in withholding the guy's name still?

To allow for sentencing and the chance of an appeal I believe.

@hydro11 didn't the judge sum up to say it didn't need to be premeditated?

Yes, that is the grey area. Basically they are saying it was a reckless act and reasonably foreseeable that death could result. I'm far from convinced TBH, I think they've set a pretty low bar for a charge of murder given it appears to be consensual and, all things considered, a fairly common thing people into BDSM do.

    BDSM + alcohol don't mix.

Appears to be consensual doesn't mean it was. And strangulation isn't at all 'a fairly common thing that people into BDSM do'

What an utter bullshit statement. BDSM isn't a monolith where everyone does everything. There are lots of different elements and kinks, practiced to varying degrees. But those who incorporate it into their lives have strict rules regarding boundaries, trust, consent, and pleasure for all.

It isn't some drunken fuckwit strangling a woman to death.

@Mokey yeah, I'd already acknowledged that in response to @canefan - if deaths are very rare then this guy doesn't have much of a defense about it being purely accidental.

I’m pretty sure the Brit press will out him, not that his name will mean anything.
The Herald has just released an article full of information about him except his name.
Has a long background in lying to people apparently

Now that he's been found guilty the name suppression will be removed forthwith

His family had reportedly disowned him some time ago. A really bad seed obviously

Is he Australian? The first thing I noticed when I heard the police interviews was the accent.

@Crucial Just read that, and another one where they interviewed his stepbrother. Stepbrother said dude was a pathological liar without a shred of humanity, sounds like dude was estranged from pretty much all of them.

    Guilty!!

So pleased that jury found the scumbag guilty.

He callously and brutally murdered a young woman, took away her life, deprived her parents (including her mother who was being treated for cancer) of the dearest person in their world, had so little remorse that he searched for porn as her corpse lay in his flat, showed so little regard for her that he buried her remains in a shallow grave. Then he lied and lied and and lied and lied and lied in court trying to slander the woman he killed in front of the world's media and her family.

I wish every second of his long sentence is living hell and his mind overwhelms him with the enormity of his crimes and his inhumanity.

Grace Millane's parents have shown enormous courage and dignity. They are clearly wonderful people. I hope they are allowed some peace now.

The conduct of the defence is this trial was appalling.

Not convinced the courts gagging the free press from naming the accused did much good either.

    Wrt that tweet ...

Firstly I think her behaviour was relevant to the circumstances of her death, and therefore relevant to the perp's defence. I am however pleased he went down.

Suggest they could remove "woman" and replace with "victim", and they'd still be wrong. But that argument is for another thread.

I said earlier in the thread that one explanation for his behaviour was that he was a narcissist and that now appears the case.

I see the Daily Mail has pulled the story with his name and photo from their site but it remains as a link on a google search. Cunning? Could claim that they published accidentally then removed quickly.

Really? Just went and found it a couple of minutes ago (mind you via google).

Are they covered by NZ name suppression laws? Or just by convention? And didn't we have that discussion earlier in the thread ... ?

Can't think why he needs name suppression.

I don't really understand why he needed name suppression in the first place. He's not a famous person, they didn't say it was to protect his family, I don't see why it mattered when the guy is no one of note and why this would affect him getting a fair trial

He’s rumoured to be up on other charges so I guess they don’t want to prejudice the trial/s if that’s the case . Old overseas articles with his name and photo are still up though

Bullshit. Her actions are incredibly relevant. The defence also made it clear that they weren't blaming her.

Probably because he is up on other charges. Also, if he didn't have name suppression the jury could be hugely biased.
