@Nepia @Number-10 @Stockcar86 @Magpie_in_aus @Higgins @Steven-Harris I'm not sure whether posts in threads that were started on the old Magpie Rugby forum still appear under the "unread" tab, so I'm just tagging you, in case you're interested in what's happening at the Condor Sevens.

    Results day one (U15):

Hastings Girls High School 12 - 12 St Mary's College
Mt Albert Grammar 21 - 5 Hastings Girls High School
Hastings Girls High School 7 - 14 Hamilton Girls High School

Hastings Boys High School 7 - 17 Feilding High School
Hastings Boys High School 10 - 17 De La Salle College
Hastings Boys High School 27 - 7 Tangaroa College

    Lindisfarne College 10 - 17 Wesley College
    Lindisfarne College 17 - 17 St Patrick's College
Mt Albert Grammar 17 - 17 Lindisfarne College

I didn't have team lists, so I had no idea who were playing, but during the games, I was impressed with the Hastings numbers 10 and 14. The no. 10 is Ethan (?) Bird, the son of Jason Bird (Head coach of Hastings Boys 1st XV). The no. 14 looked like a Fijian winger.

By the way, when I tried finding the first name of Jason Bird's son, I found an article in which HBT interviewed the father of Latrell Smiler-Ah Kiong. Waikato tried to steal him!

A Maddison Trophy, Nash Cup and Spillane Cup winner with Napier Old Boys Marist who also played premier club rugby for Clive and MAC, Ah Kiong snr, confirmed his son will be staying in the Bay next year.

"We left the decision up to him. While he had a great offer from Waikato Latrell said he had an awesome relationship with the Magpies coaches as well as Jason Shoemark at the Hawke's Bay Rugby Union's Academy so there was no need for him to leave home."

When it was put to Ah Kiong snr that his son could have a tough job putting in-form Magpies pivot Lincoln McClutchie, a product of the 2017 national title-winning HBHS first XV, out of a starting role for the Magpies in the near future Ah Kiong snr replied:

"I'm looking forward to the day when Lincoln is at 10 for the Magpies and Latrell is at fullback."

His son, who is a grandson of former Magpie and MAC midfield back Wini Smiler, will return to the Havelock North club for another summer of sevens and is tossing up between Havelock North and Clive for 15s.

I know Lindisfarne is only a minnow school in rugby, but they are really very average at this tournament. The only player that has impressed me thus far is Sam Porter-Samuels.

Only now remembered that is wanted to post this.

I'm not sure why Lindisfarne participated in the Condor Sevens instead of Napier Boys. I can't imagine that they are good enough to beat any Napier Boys' team. Maybe Napier Boys couldn't field a team due to lack of interest, I don't know, but it was a very disappointing tournament for Lindisfarne. On the positive side, they'll have learned a lot from it and, hopefully, can use that to improve. You can't fault their effort. I liked that Porter-Samuels lad, but have no idea whether this was his last year in school, or not.

Hastings Boys also had a mixed tournament. Sometimes, they looked half in holiday mode; not strange, as - for example - their captain (Thompson-Dunn) only returned from Australia the day or so before the tournament. Maybe their preparation wasn't optimal. Plenty of effort and heart though. Not all players from their 1st XV side that I expected to play, were there either.

Anyway, Latrell Smiler-Ah Kiong was again a stand-out. I assume they don't pick players for the tournament team from teams that don't make the Cup QFs, but he deserved to be in it on individual performance. I can't wait to see how he develops further and how good he can become. I'm glad he decided to stay in the Bay instead of heading to Waikato.

And then there's Cooper Flanders. It is unbelievable he's so young (he played U16 this year). I wouldn't be surprised at all if - in a few years time - we come to the conclusion that he's even better than his older brother. Very promising.

When Lucky Luke was a youngster it was claimed (by some) that he would be the best of the Whitelocks.

@Nepia He has more brothers than Cooper and arguably, he's better than all of them but Sam.

But this thread is not about the Whitelocks ... The Flanders are way more interesting.

I remember when I was at lindisfarne I asked the coach if we could put a sevens team in a local HBSS comp. He hated the ideal. We actually had enough players to have been competitive LFC usually had a handful of alright players but struggled when you needed 15-22 alright players.

Also as a school we were horrible at touch.

I always found it weird we didn't have more of a focus on 7s and touch to improve ball playing ability and lines etc in the offseason.

Maybe it was because we never had the ball against nbhs and hbhs haha.

This clip was re-posted on the Magpies' FB page this morning. Highlights from the Transit Coachlines 1st XV Rugby Tournament match between St Patrick's College (Town) and Hastings Boys' High School at Westpac Stadium (14 May 2016).

If embedding doesn't work (or disappears after a while), you can still watch it on Facebook.

Hmmm, the scholarship programme at Lindersfarne seems to be kicking into overdrive. They seem to be fielding a team as brown as Hastings these days. 🙂

@Nepia But the money seems to be a bit limited this year with them only being able to list 20 players on their team sheet. The last two positions must have proved too difficult for their bean counters to finance!
