The police say eight people are still missing on White Island / Whakaari.

Five people have been confirmed dead and 31 are injured and are being treated in hospital.

Among the missing are Australians, Americans, Chinese, British and Malaysians, as well as New Zealanders.

RNZ reporting on PM's press conference

Ok , so to memorial Ardern needs photo ops with a cork hat, Stetson , coolie hat , flat cap and a fez . It’s going to be a long day for her .

Yes I’m well aware I’m going to hell .

Because you forgot the tangata whenua....

I found the quote “the island hasn’t had a major eruption since...... 2000“ say what, the island has a history of activity and it is safe to walk on it? How did this place have a licence to begin with, or am I overthinking it.

My wife and I discussed this last night. While in Japan for the RWC we went to Mt Aso, but couldn't get within one kilometre of the caldera because of the increased activity.

And it appears they shared the same alert level of two on the scale of 1-5.

I find people using this tragedy as an excuse to push the Maori name of the island incredibly distasteful. I live in this area and never ever heard the Maori name from anyone in the public, news etc
Quite happy enough for it have dual names, but for now to be the time they decide to start using it.. fuck ...off.

A labour minister is saying it’s unfair for a family member of a victim to politicise a tragedy and compare it to Pike river

Whakaari/White Island has been its official name for 22 years. Longer than Aoraki/Mt Cook. Just because you haven't heard of that doesn't make it not so.

Should official communications use the official name or just the one you remember?

You find distaste in the most irrelevant things.

    Oh fuck off.

I didn't say how long it was the name and I never said that it wasnt its proper name so dont make up shit up, I was saying as a local who hears about White Island a lot I have never heard its Maori name ever before, even in schools who use Maori names ALOT. Yet after this tragedy suddenly I am hearing it everywhere.

So, because you have only just picked up on the fact it is somehow distasteful to use the official name in official communications.

Yeah, OK. It's like you are looking for problems to moan about.

The news and radio are official communications? No. You are the one who has tried to limit it to 'official communications'.
And it isnt me not picking up on it.... nobody has used it, but I am sure you are the expert on what is used in this area based on the the fact you live nowhere near here,...

Currently, no. But I used to live in your area around the time that the official name change happened and I had heard it before.

So, pray tell, what is distasteful about using the place name?
By the way, I just checked and the full name is being used by tour operators on their websites, even those that operate out of Tauranga.

'Pushing Maori names'. Get a life. It is your comments that are trying to politicise this tragedy and are the distasteful ones.

Looks like the family who own the island transferred ownership of White Island to the Whakaari Trust in 2010

Not a volcanologist but change from a category 1 to 2 in the last few weeks should have raised an alarm. I believe the eruption is mostly superheated water vapour but also other gases present would have affected breathing capabilities

    Harm? None. Cause irritation. Yes.

And I made it pretty clear I don't mind dual names, the timing is off though. My kids at school learn about White Island (legend and science), and schools LOVE dual names but even they never use it. Yet a tragedy occurs an suddenly now is the time? No

I bet the school uses the dual name from now on though...

I sort of get your point - the media know it is going to be a world wide news event for a few days or weeks so let’s show our political correctness to the world

The local Maori bought the White Island tour company a few years back, did they change the marketing and sign writing to dual name? Noooo because they know damn well everyone just knows it as White Island currently. That can change, but now suddenly after this?
A few white liberals in the media see a tragedy and decide to enter some woke Olympics. What next a big Tsunami in Auckland? But we only hear Tamaki Makaurau Auckland and never just Auckland on the news suddenly starting on that day?

I feel your pain .They probably do it specifically to annoy you, the same way TVNZ deliberately put Anika Moa on the pre match coverage of the rwc to fuck me off .

They were briefly using the Maori and English names early yesterday morning here but have now resorted back to White Island.
