Shit, I couldn't wait to get out of commercial (but might go back on a short contract).

    Might have a listen though.

There's f 105 pilots and world war 2 aircraft gunners interviewed in there. I think the commercial angle pays for the more interesting interviews

Has anyone listened to the Erebus disaster podcast on Stuff?
Just wondering if it’s worth it.

Not sure if this should go in here or the Planes thread, but ...

Listened to this over a week or so prior to Christmas.

My main takeaway was that Mahon was a conceited narcissist who knew exactly what he was doing in wording his findings the way he did. Am surprised if he was surprised about the reaction.

As with most issues this complicated it's obviously not a black or a white issue but several shades of grey.

In the last episode or so, it seems that both sides of the argument (Muldoon and someone from the pilot's side, can't remember who) both independently apportioned blame to the airline and to the pilots at 60/40. Probably about right IMO.

Horrible thing to have happened and too many covering their arse.

Fascinating story and if you haven't listened do so!

@booboo Yeah, I've listened to it. Like most of these things the "Reason" or "Swiss cheese model" come into play. Lots of contributing factors and finding the main causal factor is simplistic as the errors all have to line up.

The initial errors do seem to have been with the airline and Mahon's famous comment was due to covering that up (I won't comment on personalities). Could and should the pilots have spotted the errors? Maybe, which is why most attribute more of the "blame" (terrible word) to the organisation not the individuals or more specifically the pilots. That a few people tried to attribute sole responsibility is despicable in itself when you follow the whole sequence of events.

I know that the airline has had a far more robust system in place ever since and it still hurts a lot of people albeit 40 years ago, and not just the families of those who died.

Not sure if you can get this outside Australia but worth a crack.

Try downloading the ABC Listen app.

Have always been a big fan of 'Conversations with Richard Fidler. Tends to be on 11am to midday on ABC Local. Get to hear bits of it if I'm driving between jobs at that time.

Have just discovered you can get the whole interviews from the above app.

Fldler seems to be one of those interviewers that get's more out of his subjects by keeping quiet. They seem to have added another interviewer, Sarah Kernovske, who is pretty good too.

Have in recent times listened to:

Bill Bryson on his new book: The Body: A Guide for Occupants
A bloke called William Dalrymple on the British East India Company*
A bloke called Misha Glenn on organised crime (McMafia)

      • minor trigger warning for wokeness

    And others.

If interested and you download the app, flick right to the bottom of the first page. Flick on 'Find More Stories, then 'Conversations', and scroll to suit.

Jocko Willink is fast becoming my favourite gym podcast. Listened to these 2 in the last few days, absolutely mindblowing stuff what these soldiers went through. Thinking 2020 might have me going through them all from the start.

Over the last week or so I have been able to leave for work later and so have been able to catch the first part of The Aotearoa History show live on RNZ National at 6:30.

It is what it says - over 14 twenty minute light hearted yet informative episodes.

    Available at

RNZ | Te Reo Irirangi o Aotearoa

The Aotearoa History Show | RNZ

The Aotearoa History Show | RNZ

Deep dive into a rigorous romp through the history of New Zealand, from its volcanic beginnings, through settlement, wars, and social change, to the late 20th century.

Its one of the best of 2019 imho . My favourite epsiode is probably the one where Rhiannon Giddons talks about Dolly Parton explains how country music is tied to a bunch of other kinds of traditional music around the world.

Ms Giddons is coming to NZ for a couple of concerts soon, I reckon I'll go and hear her live.

The podcast covered a lot of bases , didn't really talk much about her husband though. Its pretty incredible that despite her having been hugely famous for so long they've managed to keep that side of their life so private.
