@mariner4life Yeah, in the US everyone whined about the cable packages now they're wanting similar streaming packages.

It's probably only a couple of years away from streaming packages - presumably through your ISP, pay for your broadband and a package of streaming services you want. They might even provide you with a little box to connect to your TV.

Voda already lining themselves up for that. A very cheap (for the quality) unit that provides all of your TV via internet with streaming FTA and apps for catch up and pay providers.

The problem at the moment is getting everyone on board even with subscriber apps. Amazon is a hold out on other platforms as they want to sell Firesticks but in return some others then won't do an app for Amazon etc etc

@Nepia i also like Stan, also Amazon. It does my head in that nobody has an "aggregator" product out there. Searching for a show you've heard of on multiple services is so painful.

    @voodoo @Nepia

Same here, I have Foxtel (IQ4), Netflix, Amazon Prime and Stan. We also frequently stream from ABC and SBS.

My wife thinks it is ridiculous we have all those, not to mention costs.

We have Stan because like @Nepia I got a 6 month free offer through Telstra and kept it for a while after to watch the shows we got into.

Cancelled it about a year ago as I thought it had the weakest catalogue of the streaming services. But in the last 3-6 months their content/catalogue has improved a shite load and fortunately, Telstra's new rewards program offered another 6 months free as a reward for Gold customers.

When this free period ends, I'm going to be confused as to which one to cancel. As the wife doesn't want to have both Prime and Stan.

Wait until I tell her I've recently subscribed to Disney.

    Been nice knowing you all.

As a side note on the searching functionality, we had a Telstra TV (version 2 with 4K) and that had an aggregated search function but it was shite and didn't really search across the different apps. Our Samsung TV (series 8, 65", 4K) has all the apps inbuilt so we stopped using the Telstra TV and gave it o the bro-in-law. The Samsung also has an inbuilt search function but like the Telstra TV, it doesn't search well across the apps which is really disappointing.

Telstra TV is at least 2 years old.

You still need to pay for everything separately (but i have Foxtel Sports and Drama on it for like $25 a month)

@RoninWC I've read that the app quality in smart TVs is shit. Especially how people are getting ads too. Some of that was off the back of the RWC and spark. Unless you can keep your main play device up to date life will get even more complex

Don't use the Smart TV for Apps! The integration and UI is normally rubbish. TV tech moves so fast that they don't even have time to test properly. Even those that use Android as a base struggle to keep the apps up to date.
Designated use units seem to be much more stable and trying to d just the one thing they are made for. ATV, Amazon Fire, Voda TV etc are the better way to go. Just check what you can get on each.

To be honest, we have no problems at all the the Samsung UI and the apps. Samsung does update the apps as well as the UI quite regularly. I don't have updates set for auto, I like to check myself every couple of weeks.

And there are no ads to speak of at all with ours.

To be honest, we found the Samsung interface easier to use than the Telstra TV, not that it was hard to use at all, quite the opposite really as it had a decent UI. Another benefit of using the Samsung inbuilt apps, it all uses the same remote, which is even better.

It also integrated really well with the IQ4 and we can control the IQ4 with the Samsung remote if we want but generally use the Foxtel remote.

Samsung has an aversion to building FTA into their platforms so you have to switch input to watch 'normal' TV. e.g. they are the only main manufacturer in the UK without integrated Freeview.
Apart from that they do make the best Smart TVs

i got rid of my Foxtel box for the first time since i moved to Aus. Not worth the 130 a month to be able to record, or rewind. Or watch reruns of Friends. (fuck friends!!!!).

@Crucial I use Netflix on my TV, it's actually great, but all the others I use the PS4 currently and will be switching to Apple TV soon when the rugby season starts.

It's such a Queensland thing to have outside TVs, my cuzzies in Brisbane basically install them in the outside pool area or carport the moment they move into a new place. Thankfully they've all given up smoking now as it was like being in a Sydney bar with their bullshit fake smoking areas.
