@Nepia I honestly don’t know. I think a team carries two (starter and backup) (or maybe three?) goalies on the road, and then there’s some sort of procedure for an “emergency backup” in the unlikely event the team loses all their available goalies. This 42-year-old guy has been a Zamboni driver and is apparently an emergency backup for a minor league team that plays in the arena. He’s not on the Carolina Hurricanes roster. Incredibly, both the Canes and the Leafs are in hot playoff pursuits, they need every point right now to make it, and this backup goalie’s home team was the Leafs. Pretty amazing their fans were pulling for the hometown guy playing for the Enemy.

They have a similar thing in sevens, when we won the world cup there was an Argentinian guy on the bench

I discovered this not long ago, in relation to some of @jegga 's insta-hoes in the Hawt thread. In light of this revelation, I had to go back and re-“read” the entire thread.
