I guess there is a difference on muscles between the ground moving below you on the mill and pushing off to move over the ground when outdoors. When I used to run, I found treadmills much better for avoiding injury - especially my back. Lower impact, slightly cushioned, even surface etc must be better for the joints.

Yeah it has incline, which I only had set on 2 or 3, which isn't a lot, but when I road run I sit around 4.50-5.25mins per km, which is on up/down, but this says I am doing well over 6, despite me feeling I am going along quickly.

I read an article (in a magazine, not the Internet, so it's gotta be true) following studies that had shown running on a treadmill is better for you and will achieve better results than normal running due to your sub conscious being more focussed on a treadmill than out running where there are distractions...plus it is better on your joints and I can watch tv :)

I hate road running, but really enjoy trail running, having to focus on your footing on uneven ground, just a lot more challenging.

I'm pretty anti running as I don't particularly enjoy it and I think it is bad on the joints for us heavier jokers.

I'm anti running because I'm really shit at it and my back is fooked. Injuries aside though I'd rate it as the no.1 exercise for losing weight.

Yes for losing "weight" but some of that will be muscle. That's why most runners look like telephone poles.

High intensity interval training I reckon is best for losing fat an keeping muscle. Short bouts of extremely high effort. That 400m run is pretty good for that but probably at the longer end of what you should be doing.

A mate of mine was a nationally ranked runner, they got him into doing a few weights mainly to strengthen the legs but I agree JK, the top ones have a real emaciated look, not something I find appealing ( and I'd need to drop about 30kg as well )

well I can tell you I have no intention of getting to my 'normal' BMI, which is when I'd be looking emaciated!

I just wanna lose a bit of the insulation round my middle, which I expect the high intensity stuff I am doing, 'should' go some way to achieving

As I said above, I especially like trail running, but not fussed on road running, treadmill is in the middle I guess, but easier due to its accessibility.

Yeah - I'm not necessarily talking about long distance running, just running to shed a few kg. Just a theory but I reckon if you did high intensity intervals on treadmill vs HI on a bike for same time you would burn more calories on the mill. Maybe doing burpees for same time would even better but I wouldn't wish that on anyone!

Ughhhh burpees! Only exercise I hate more is squat jumps, find them horrible on my knees and cant get much distance out of them for the effort I put in. Even prefer bear crawls

Burpees are the fucken worst especially in the last few reps where you try and jump and can't even get off the ground.

BUt for me, I think it has more been about what I am eating, and I have been cutting back on portion sizes, and some days I am freakin starving, others, am sweet.

Tabata style workout yesterday with push ups, box jumps, mountain climbers and sprints (plus mowed half lawns with push mower) then had to put up the kids pool to cool down, luckily got a heavy downpour straight after which replenished about half the water I used :)
