Movie review thread...

finally watched The Imitation Game last night. Great movie. It's funny, you know the bloody machine works, and yet you still feel tension during the movie when it doesn't.

Holy shit Highlander is rad as fuck

Mariner would have enjoyed fapping over the titties at the start when McLeod is nailing the wife in the Scottish highlands..... -

Wild Tales.

Very entertaining. I want to say well shot etc (it really was visually engaging), but that is beside the point.

A very good series of "eye for an eye" stories, which were of course doomed. Except for the final sequence, which was quite shit.

8/10.
-

Revenant

First, let me say that my wife did NOT handle the raw-meat-eating/survival stuff very well at all. So if you're squeamish, best to look away. :)

In summary: beautiful, documentary-level cinematography, a good (if minimal) score used to appropriate effect. Some performances that could be considered strong, if limited due to a lack of dialogue. Mostly gritty and realistic, though I have to question some of the musket work that veered between SAS Sniper and Stormtrooper at times.

Was too long, at times was just overly indulgent bullshit by the director, and the lack of narrative didn't help piece together a great storyline. I get that the effect of the thing was to just drop you into a situation revolving around a man and his revenge, in tough frontier country. But at times the dialogue (particularly from Hardy's character) was incomprehensible, and I wasn't the only one who thought so. They left the other guy with a pommy accent, why not Fitzgerald?

I don't see what the Oscars buzz is all about for the actors. Besides spitting at the camera hysterically and getting torn up by a bear (props), as well as eating a variety of dead animals, there isn't a lot to talk about in terms of Leo's performance IMHO. There should probably be a few gongs for technical stuff, but otherwise.... nup.

He just wandered (crawled) around in pain, fell face down in the snow a lot, and ate animals of varying freshness. And he never looks old enough to be anyone's Dad

To me, all this industry hype sounds like when you meet a wine piston wristed gibbon or art piston wristed gibbon and they read shit in that just isn't there. It was good, but not great, though I'm sure freezing his arse off for a couple of months trying to lead that film was a physical strain and worthy of recognition in some fashion.

I'd give it 3.5 dead bears out of 5.
-

I found I couldn't criticise the way the film was made but for some reason I just didn't enjoy it very much. I think it was worth the money I paid to see it but, like you, I would probably have rather watched something else in retrospect.
-

i.e. maybe a nomination. But win? Dunno - I haven't seen every film out there.

Speaking of Oscars: the Academy has decided the "White Oscars" hashtag is bigger than them and modified their voting rules.
-

they should just open it up to a public vote!

Yeah then we get shit like Justin Bieber winning an Oscar for appearing in Zoolander 2. Or some fat chick winning purely because of all the fat chicks voting.

That's how other reality shows work. -

or a Bollywood or Chinese actor we've never heard of winning it for some movie we will never watch

Well, that'd piss the black actors off even more if we're going on representative numbers in motion picture leading roles...

If you're going to boycott the fucking awards, then do it for a real reason like the community-level racism and shit. Not for failing to get the recognition you want while you swim through a pool through of hundred dollar bills and all the coke you can snort off your wife's arse.

Remember 2001 was dubbed "The Black Oscars" because Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won? its been slim pickings since then:

Should have won it for getting her tits out in Swordfish.
