Hasn't the Revenant been a massive flop at the box office? Pretty farking retarded going head-to-head with Star Wars.

Interestingly the black boycott Oscars will be hosted by Chris Rock. No surprise that Will Smith's wife (Plunkett or something) is behind the boycott. No doubt she'd have as many awards and nominations as Daniel Day-Lewis if it wasn't for Hollywood racism. Just look at how the Academy have snubbed her husband. Oh wait... -

No, it's made over $200m which is bloody good money for what is nearly an art house film.
-

Yep, in the UK Hatefull Eight came out, then a week later Revenant. And Hatefull 8 has died on its arse as everyone switched to going to see The Revenant, which is taking huge money. They are both boring as all fuck, the only difference is the cabin & Sam Jackson is wearing a bear rather than being raped by one.

Luckily Dirty Grandpa is out this week. Best thing DeNiro has done since Taxi Driver.

The awards season can sometimes be great, but bewteen H8, Revenant, Brooklyn and fucking Room this year is shithouse.
-
Ahh, must have looked at wiki article too early or something. Not a bad take at all.

Ice Cube seems to have hit the nail on the head regarding race & award shows in general.

I watched that 'What we do in the shadows" movie

laughed out loud, never looked at my watch and felt in a reflective and good mood at the end. (Pretty much my criteria for judging movies)

Good movie, good fun - great for expats away from NZ
-

Von Ryan's Express. Trains, Nazis, Frank Sinatra. Some pretty cool effects considering the age. Was quite surprised at the ending, even now that rarely happens, would have been revolutionary at the time (also, the shooting of a fleeing woman.)

You had me at this.

I pretty sure I saw this when I was a kid, might have to track it down again.
-

Been catching up on some of the Oscar movies in the last few weeks:

Spotlight - think this is the best of the lot. About journos investigating the Catholic Church in Boston. Good acting, tight script, doesn't overdo it. 9/10

Big Short - Great cast but it seemed a bit disjointed to me. Like they were trying to cram too much in the one movie. But it rolled along well and was an enjoyable watch. 7.5/10

Sicario - About the drug war in Mexico and the US attempts to police it. Really good film, but a bit dark and it loses it's way a bit in the middle. Benicio del Toro kills it. 8.5/10

Bridge of Spies - Speilberg and Hanks in a Cold War spy film, and it does exactly what it says on the label. Never really gripping, though. 8/10
-

Bridge of Spies was a bloody good movie, good story and great performances (Rylance and Hanks) so no issue with it being in the Oscar race.

Sicario isn't a best picture nominee right? I think that's correct, I was wowed by it on first watch but have been cooling on it ever since. The Del Toro character action movie is the one I want to see.

Of Baabaas listed movies I thought the Big Short was the best (I haven't seen Spotlight yet but will do so this week).
-

Not Best Picture nominated, no. But has got a few for cinematography and that sort of thing.

It was a bit confused, I agree.
I don't understand why the movie was focussed on Emily Blunt and not Benicio del Toro. Blunt's character was just annoying throughout. If you hated the mission so much, just leave! The best parts of the movie were the ops when she wasn't there, or was there but only in the background. I reckon it would be a better movie if you pushed that character back a bit, and we got to see a bit more Benicio.
