@Virgil I think if you served most Yanks a savoury scone they'd tell you it was a biscuit.

When I lived in the USA I really missed a good quality muffin. A local cafe sold them but they weren't the same.

Scones need to be hot for me to eat with melted butter, and I have never been a fan of bagels. I tried cream cheese and lox but bagels always taste stale to me.

@Bovidae Over the centuries there have been many theories as to why the Jews have been persecuted. I would say look no further than bagels. Just horrid.

Freshly made (and I really do mean fresh) they can be good. Commercially made ones are a waste of flour.

To divert further, I have never been into pretzels until having those fresh type soft pretzels with a light mustard dip and beer at a brewery in Denver.
Basically the same as fresh bagels except a little lighter in texture.

Back to scones/ biscuits though and my mum was just telling me today how she went to a cooking demo in Mississippi were she was shown a technique for biscuits that was a scone made with buttermilk but then before cutting the dough was folded like rough puff pastry. Reckoned they were top notch.

Always thought cheese scones were a waste of both cheese and scones.

    That is all.

So I was wandering past the above mentioned Sconery and so remembering this thread I bought a scone.

I walked to the park, ate it, walked back to the Sconery and bought another scone.
