Coen movies are not always for mass appeal either. You would think Raising Arizona would have been popular at that time, and apart from Fargo, my personal favourite is Miller's Crossing.

I really didn't like the Coen's early movies, but I've liked most of their post 2000 ones. I reckon they've been slightly more mass appeal since No Country for Old Men.

Millers Crossing was one of my most disappointing movie watching experiences after watching the trailer. I should give it a rewatch some time.

    @Nepia

I felt the same way about "No Country for Old Men".

A rewatch of Gladiator. I've always enjoyed the movie but I struggle to understand how Russell won the best actor for that performance.

Last night was The Big Lebowski. It's not my favourite Coen brothers movie but John Turturro and John Goodman are scene-stealers. The Dude, is well, the Dude.

absolutely love both of those movies.

What about their other post 2000 movies? I wonder if there's a fan divide. 😉

Looking at the list I've only seen:

True Grit > Burn After Reading > Hail, Caesar.

    Fuck.

I knew I liked them but I didn't realise I'd seen all their films except The Ladykillers.

Got time for all of them.

Agree. Russ had great presence and coolness ( before becoming a fat, grey beaded douche who does horrific music ) but I certainly didn’t think he deserved an Oscar for that. He got one so by rights Clint, Harrison and Arnie shoulda got truckloads.

Big Lebowski is a movie I genuinely enjoy more each time I re watch it. It’s great fun.

@MN5 Oscars are a popularity contest, and often you get a "make up" Oscar for a previous part where you should have gotten on.

None of the actors you list have the CV Crowe has, he's delivered some great performances. It's like Pacino winning for Scent of a Woman, where he was fucking horrible. Yet, previous movies he was amazing.

Agree. Russell should have won the year after (2002) for A Beautiful Mind so they got that wrong in both years.

@Bovidae @MN5 I would add that I think Harrison potentially could have gotten one for the Mosquito Coast. He was brilliant in that, in a non-action movie way.

I'm surprised that Harrison Ford has only been nominated once, back in 1986 for Witness. He did receive some more recent Golden Globes nominations, including Mosquito Coast, but not for the Academies.

Not denying that, they’re iconic film stars as opposed to great actors I just think it was ridiculous he won the Oscar for Gladiator that’s all. I guess your explanation alludes to this though.

Gladiator was a revenge fuelled action movie essentially....

THAT was an excellent movie. I need to see it again, Frantic was too.

Didn’t Crowe lose out on that for the phone throwing incident ?

Even the most skeptical people are coming back around to Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League at the moment.

Two good news stories for me this week!

Please, what does this all mean? That he is doing the second instalment of the Justice League? (I liked the first one)

He’s doing his edit Of the footage available, as he had to leave the project some of the way through for family reasons, so the version we saw was a mix of him and Joss Whedon.

I probably won’t watch unless I know someone not a Snyder fan boy who watches it and says it’s good, as he’s not my type of director.

Story I read this morning was that they will need to do quite a bit of re-work and new work to finish his vision at a cost of an extra $30M.
Also his 'cut' could be a 4hr one destined for HBO, so maybe screened as a two parter.

i can't imagine the amount of work that it would take to turn that turd in to a decent movie. Re-write every piece of dialogue, the entire plot, and re-do the appalling effects?

They do have hot heroes though
