    The NZU20s may get better coaching this way, but they also need better selectors.

    I hope the German panzer tank gets selected. It’s kind of Hollywood movie stuff if he ends up playing for NZ.

    @Billy-Tell In case you mean Anton Segner, he's not eligible for NZU20 this year.

    Why not?

    @Billy-Tell IIRC it's because the residency requirement only starts to run once a player leaves school (unless his family lives here, too, but that's not the case). He was still at school in 2019.

    Philpott's comments about having better kicking to play a territorial game isn't addressing the main problem. As usual, it will come down to whether the NZ tight five are competitive against the NH teams and SA/Aust.

    Havila Molia is an interesting addition. He was the captain and TH prop for St Paul's Collegiate last year and I expected him to be in the mix for the NZ Schools teams. A big unit and very mobile.

    From the World Rugby media release of 21 March 2020 (link below)

    • The World Rugby U20 Championship 2020, scheduled to be hosted in northern Italy in late June and July, has been cancelled following detailed consultation with the Federazione Italiana Rugby

    An interesting article on allblacks.com today. A few names from 10 years ago that I don't remember at all.

    Totally missed this announcement 11 days ago. I assume they didn't postpone it, instead of cancel it, for financial reasons?

    I feel sorry for all the guys that miss out this year and won't be eligible anymore next year.

    There is no NZ U20 camp so it would be hard to select a team. But I'm sure it is also a cost-saving decision with the Jock Hobbs U19 tournament previously cancelled.

    @Bovidae They've had camps though; they have a group of players to select from. The Jock Hobbs U19 Tournament would have provided the pool of players for the 2021 squad, not this year's squad.

    I thought there was a final camp to be held before the final selection?

    @Bovidae Yes, I think so, but I'm sure they already have a fair idea of who they want after the regional and specialist camps they've had.

    @Stargazer You are assuming Philpott has a plan. 🙂

    BTW, my point about the Jock Hobbs being caned was to highlight another example of NZR saving money, not related the selection of the 2020 U20s.

    Good news, Philpott is gone.

    @Bovidae Excellent news.

    I know he's already been there, done that, but if Scott Robertson is interested, I hope they get him involved again! Leon MacDonald would be good; Tony Brown and Jason Ryan, too.

    Keep someone like Hammett away from those young lads.

    I'm not a fan of Jason Holland and Aaron Mauger either, but they wouldn't be a disaster like Philpott.

    @Stargazer

    MacDonald would be a good choice amongst the SR coaches.

    If you look at the overall record of the U20 coaches the results have been getting worse:

    Rennie (2008-10, 1st, 1st, 1st)
    Anscombe (2011, 1st)
    Penney (2012, 2nd)
    Boyd (2013-14, 4th, 3rd)
    Robertson (2015-16, 1st, 5th)
    Philpott (2017-19, 1st, 4th, 7th)

    Ieremia and Tiatia would be worth a look too, have made a massive difference to Auckland and the Blues.

    @Bovidae Not sure you can really say that if you looke at the coaches before Philpott. Boyd never coached a team that became first; Robertson did. Penny and Anscombe only coached them one year; you don't know what would have happened if they'd had another year. Rennie definitely the most successful.

    @Kirwan Looking at M10 Cup coaches, there are way more options, but I think it would be good to have higher level coaches (SR coaches).
