@voodoo here it is for his for hers for better for worse....

I love that band. Saw them live 8 years ago with Crowded house. They stole the show

With Che Fu? That would have been awesome. Last saw them live at whatever the Waikato Uni pub was called back in the day.

It's the signature song from a band that you grow to absolutely despise over time.

I always thought Sweet Home Alabama was their signature song. Probably as I had no exposure to Freebird until later in life.

I'm not a Led Zep fan, have tried to get into them but just can't do it. Same with the Stones. Two massive bands I just can't listen to.

@mariner4life said in What are you listening to, right now................:

, my favourite Zeppelin song is the equally self-indulgent "Kashmir"

I 100% don't get this song. I don't like it. People love it. But the usual blah blah blah would be a boring world if we liked all the same stuff.

@Nepia Good Rolling Stones is almost as good as it gets. They have an awful lot of mediocre in their incredibly large catalogue though

    Mine is the Beatles.

I consider the Beatles to be the most overrated band in history. None of them are great musicians, there isn't a strong voice among them. What they did was write a pretty catchy pop song at a time when the alternative was total shithouse.

Important? sure. Great? Get the fuck out.

Each Beatle individually has released what I consider a classic song, "Imagine", "Live and Let Die" and "My Sweet Lord".....sorry Ringo.....make that "most" Beatles. Massively overrated as a unit though.

Stones are about the same level I reckon. "Gimme Shelter" and "Miss you" are good to sing along to in the car though.

I love the Beatles, and they gave the Stones one of their early hits

Odd that you love the Stones yet in this post you call them total shithouse. 😉

Just on the Beatles again Paul McCartney regularly gets near the top of best Bassist polls which absolutely boggles my mind.....

Also, these guys seem to like Ringo quite a bit.

    Freebird

The whole "play freebird" story is amusing. It became a catch phrase for fans and spread, but the best bit was when someone shouted "play freebird man", the band just stopped and said "we are", and they were.

I don't love the Stones. I love 10-15 of their songs. Which is actually a pretty small percentage

    My dad fucking loves them

All good, I was just joking around.

My old man used to listen to old 50s rockabilly and country so it used to drive me nuts on long drives. Quite like it now as it reminds me of him.

I always thought it was weird that a lot of Maori guys of that era liked that music, but I wonder if it stems from the shearing sheds.

Crikey, some interesting opinions posted on this thread overnight.

Beatles criticism is ridiculous. First to do it, and do it time and tie again. Genius albums such as Sgt Peppers towards the tail end of their career. Amazing genius fantastic musicians. Fair enough if you don't like them - each to their own. Pretty sure Hendrix guitar work would be considered run-of-the-mill now ... does that make him any less of a legend?

I'm a late bloomer to the stones. Probably early noughts when I bought their forty licks best of that I realised I pretty much so loved every song on it. Went through a fair bit of their back catalogue and didn't mind it, but not too much above it. I love their live stuff though. A long time since I put on any of their music which wasn't live. Richards & Wood guitar playing live is probably the best I've seen.

Led Zeppelin. I really should love this band. They spawned my favourite genre of music and individually as musicians they are epic. But I can only say I don't mind them. Never felt the urge to listen to their music over and over again as I have for others. Immigrant song probably my favourite.

Appetite best tracks. CAn't believe out to get me was rated as the best by somebody. It's like John Wick all over again. That song has "filler" written all over it. It's always Jungle for me, always. But so many epic songs. I now have my kids sining along to paradise city when it comes on which is a proper Dad moment. Agree with @Hooroo ... when paradise comes on the radio, the volume goes straight to 10.

Skynrd. I dig most of what I hear of these. I love Free Bird and generally really enjoy a lot of music from that area of the States. Southern Rock is pretty cool. Bought a car once and they had left a CD called Best Of Southern Rock in the stereo. Did enjoy it. Had some America, Crowes, Skynrd as probably the biggest names with some Neil Young as well. Odd place for a Canadian!

Glad I've cleared all of that up for the rest of you. Consider yourself enlightened.

He changed the game. Before him it was all inoffensive twanging guitar work coming from groups like the Beatles.

Hendrix sounded like he came from outta space. Still does. Fantastic singer and frontman too.

Fantastic singer? Come on ..... He could carry a tune, but that was about it. No disagreement on his front man ability though.

Changed the game indeed. Hence, why I disagreed with the synopsis of the Beatles.

I think he had a great bluesy, soulful voice. People probably forget that though cos he also happened to be the greatest guitar slinger that ever lived.

I don't see how the Beatles changed the game anymore than the Stones, Animals, Yardbirds, Who etc.

Seriously? That's like saying you think Jonah is over rated as the likes of Naholo, Savea run over people too, and their opposition is bigger ...

I guess there are comparisons to Oasis with the Beatles - nothing too hard, just plain easy catchy / poppy rock ballads.

Beatles are like Michal Jordan IMHO. Plenty of stars before them, but the first true global mega stars. And given that Lennon/McCartney wrote and performed all their hits, you have to caveat out some serious facts to not give them the credit they deserve.

McCartney's voice is pretty damn impressive to IMHO. I'm take it or leave it on Lennon.

You can't really compare music to sport though. All opinion as opposed to tries/assists/tackles/runs/wickets/goals/points etc.

I've heard plenty of the Beatles and just don't get it. At all. A few catchy singalongs at absolute best in my opinion.
