Bowie did mange to sell 140 million albums (according to the BBC). Which is quite a few really.
Adele has 40 million (google) but still going of course.
Record sales must be some sort of "rating"? That would make him one of the most popular artists ever, even if you don't like him / his music. Other lists of sales don't even have him on there though, which would make him under rated.

To me the real measure is how you are rated by your peers and those that come after you.
You can obviously say that you don't enjoy his music, but I can't see at all how he can be overrated when so many artists have been influenced by his stuff.
Similar to the Beatles discussion. Influences still resounding through popular music. I never really listen to them but don't doubt their rating.

I'm pretty dubious how accurate record sales really are to be honest. So much of it is record companies inflating the numbers.
In saying that I think the yardstick of about 100 million ( if accurate ) puts said artist in the all time elite category. One which Olivia Newton John, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and Justin Beiber apparently occupy
The list I saw had Adele with 120 million records sold. Which one is actually right ?
-
@Crucial As I said no real measure for any of it. Personal preferences are our own "ratings".
Other artists being influenced? Yeah, O.K. hard to quantify though.
Oh, and I do like Bowie. Went to the "Serious moonlight" concert at Western Springs. Was great.

Yep. One thing I have learned today is that record sales numbers are really dodgy.
Garth Brooks, FFS , was in the top 5 on most lists.

That and Reggae are just about the only genres I can't stand. In saying that there's occasionally a few decent tracks that pop up.

Yep, they like both kinds of music.

Another rabbit hole.
Classifying bands into a "genre" argument / discussion. Plenty of reggae I like, plenty that I don't. Good track that one you posted though.
The Stranglers are supposed to be punk. Maybe in their philosophy, but the music just aint for me. I like them, but rock/pop really.

Their musicianship is way too good to be punk

Saw that over lockdown and loved it. Being together unchanged as a band for FIFTY ONE years is fucken extraordinary. You forget they did some pretty damn cool stuff in the 70s before their 80s heyday as well.
I knew someone else had mentioned watching the doco but I couldn't remember who. ZZ Top's 1970s albums are definitely their best with Tres Hombres probably at the top.
Dusty Hill is every bit the frontman that Billy Gibbons is and I loved how Frank Beard very bluntly told how he spent his first massive pay check on drugs.
Yeah, I didn't realise his addictions were so bad. The story behind the beards was cool.

Although I must admit I’ve enjoyed this more and more as it’s gone on.
So you under rated him?
If I was to be Mr Serious for a minute - all music is completely subjective.
Except Nickelback and Kid Rock. They are objectively rubbish.

@MajorRage
Hand up for the incorrect comment about 'writing' her own music. She does 'co-write' most of her songs alongside various guns for hire. That's very big of you to lift your view of Adele from zero-credit, to the smallest bit of credit it's possible to give. BTW just to refresh your memory, here is you agreeing with me that he's an over rated musician.

Bowie live at Glastonbury tonight.
Has there ever been a more over rated musician?
Musician yes. Artist no.
That Glastonbury set of his is pretty good.
Bowie was always about the whole package rather than just the music.
@Crucial said in What are you listening to, right now................:
OK.
Maybe a list of artists that claim Bowie as inspirational to their career vs the same for Adele? If there is any over rating going on here it is you with Adele.
As I said, feel free to like her music, but it just seems strange when someone raves about a performer like her then disses a popular music legend as over-rated.
Thank you for your approval to like her music - that means a lot to me.
@MN5 said in What are you listening to, right now................:
I agree that he is a great artist ( losing him and especially Prince in quick succession was devastating for music ) but I always find "songwriting" on it's own a tough yardstick cos based on that I'd love Bob Dylan too. I don't, in fact I can't stand him.
Yes, very much so. Dylan is another I throw in the same bucket.
-
Dylan's overrated because I don't like him
(That's what we all mean if we're honest)

I hate his voice, his songs and the shitty cover versions that otherwise cool artists seem to do.

It's a question. are you able to answer it?
Turn out I can. The answer is yes. That person is Bob Dylan.
