    Same.

Weird one is Leonard, though. Not even in his strongest position, majority of career as loosehead.
Hill is a bit of a homer to for the target audience of the paper. But he was good. If you asked 50 former greats to pick an all time 15 probably all 50 would pick a different guy at 6, its that kind of position.

Hill was a weapon. He's in that top bracket I reckon.

Leonard played test rugby for a long time and won a world cup, he doesn't look out of place.

Yeah. But Leonard was categorically never the best THP in the world, at any stage, even in his own era. IMO.
For a few years in the mid 90s you could put a case for him being best LHP.

He sticks out like dogs balls to me in an otherwise good team.

Too young to remember JPR Williams. He must have been some player if he was a better Fullback than Serge Blanco or Christian Cullen.

I'd pick Maa Nonu and Danie Gerber ahead of his midfield.

Buck Shelford ahead of Zinzan Brooke. Jerome Kaino above Richard Hill. Os Du Randt ahead of Tom Smith.

          The rest about right.

@sparky Danie Gerber is a very good call. He put the fear of God into us in 1981! πŸ™‚

It's a good team, but it's got a bit of a look of making sure there's at least one player from each of the Home Unions - and that's helped squeeze out all of the Saffas.

Here is Gerber cutting up the Irish at 38 seconds.

There's an Irish player applauding him it was that good. Very few players could maintain that sort of balance and pace while weaving. Cullen and JK obviously, with Lomu absurd for a big man.

At least 50% of the NH would likely pick Richard Hill at 6. He's revered around these parts as one of the greatest ever.

As was Kaino. To my mind they played differing roles and so hard to pick one over the other given natural bias an a preference for a style of play. Either would be a good pick. I’d go for Hill because, well because of my natural bias 😁

@Tim IMO the unsung hero of the English pack at that time, when Back, Dayglo, Johnson seemed to get most of the plaudits, I thought HIll was the real standout.

TBH, it didn't seem that way to me, the hype out of the NH about Hill was off the charts (again to me).

When I was living there he was playing and I don't remember too much hype ... but by the time of RWC 2003 (and I was back in NZ) I remember lots of hype.

The Hill thing is an odd one

People tend to fall over themselves calling him the most underrated player ever. And that's true to an extent, he didn't have the star profile of Back or Dallaglio. But if everyone is constantly singing his praises (and it was happening whilst he was still playing), I wouldn't really call him unsung or underrated.

Great player though. Best six ever? Not so sure

Richard Hill was a great player.

As was Kaino. To my mind they played differing roles and so hard to pick one over the other given natural bias an a preference for a style of play. Either would be a good pick. I’d go for Hill because, well because of my natural bias 😁

Yeah it's funny, in another team and maybe time Hill would have played 7 and would obviously be nowhere near this team because of Lord Richard of McCaw.

Tis true. Hill started his international career at 7 including the Lions in 97. He was a pretty handy 7 but better suited at 6 for England.

Oh and by the way, it is not polite to keep reminding us that you have a conveyor belt of world class 7s. Not kind at all.

I think you could make an argument for other props in this team. Tom Smith was good, but his reputation is based mainly on the 1997 Lions tour, and obviously he is Scottish.

                                          Richard Hill was superb.

When he was king hit by Nathan Grey in the second test of the Lions v Australia 2001 Series it turned the tide.

"Richard Hill falls very awkwardly here"

Up until that point the Lions had been dominating Australia and if Hill had stayed on the park would have wrapped the series up in 2 IMHO

Should have been a penalty in front of the sticks and Grey red carded.

Nathan Grey didn't even get a warning FFS
