I saw Deadpool yesterday and really liked it.

Juvenile humour? Check. Hyper violence bordering on cartoonish? Check. Indulgence of my 80's music guilty pleasure? Check. Reward for comic book movie and pop culture knowledge? Check.

If the above isn't in your wheelhouse then it might not be the movie for you.

It's also refreshing to watch a movie that's been made for the fans, with less restrictions than most studio films... the R rating, etc.

Deadpool was violent, vulgar and childish. My son and I loved it. I also thought it was a nice touch to model Deadpool's "ugly face" on Paul O'Connell

Deadpool was great, wife and I went last night and both really enjoyed it. Heaps of laughs in the cinema and 'eww' reactions to some of the more brutal scenes. Baby hand got the biggest laugh. Did you guys see the bit after the end credits?

Def not a film you take your kids too if any of them are under the age of 27.

Even if the reviews you guys gave were bad I'd still see it, cutting off a mans head with a samurai sword and kicking it at his mates is almost on a par with a raccoon firing a machine gun .
What an amazing time to be alive .

Zero Dark Thirty

With Netflix back in the house, I'm catching up on a few older movies, and this was consumed in two sittings.

Have to say it was effective at creating the operational tension and frustration of trying to track down Bin Laden. The politics, the machinations, the dead ends and sheer difficulty of tracking down someone who doesn't want to be found in an area where locating anyone is extremely difficult without them being on the grid.

The combat stuff was a little more cowboy. They're concentrating on being quiet, then screaming out instructions and shit when they're going to breach a door. The fuck? I read some comments from one of the Seal Team Six guys who said the assault stuff was a little wanky at times, and probably didn't reflect the chaos and confusion of a combat scene, no matter than the SEALs outnumbered any armed combatants 5-1.

Overall I really enjoyed it. Can see why it got a lot of attention, beyond the 'MURICA! USA! USA! USA! flag waving - actually there was surprisingly little of that overall.

The end sequence was quite humane - all that time, now the goal achieved, and what next? She had no fucking idea.

And it raises questions about her time in the CIA to start with: 12 years, all the time, straight out of high school. She must have been recruited before 9/11, so either its part of some CIA recruitment scheme for psychopaths or genius types. A great bit of intrigue.

I really liked ZDT, it was different to what i expected, and i liked the way it showed a long, frustrating process, instead of a montage in an action flick

yeah I enjoyed it too, especially that it wasn't the 'yay America' kind of thing you come to expect with these kinds of film.

It would have been even more frustrating if they didn't get Bin Laden I guess, opps spoiler alert, that last action scene was a pretty decent way to finish.

I'm still mystified she won the Oscar for the Hurt Locker - this was a much better film (not sure what it was up against, but don't think HL should have won full stop).

That's the one based on wild pork and watercress isn't it? I hope it's good, that was one of my favourite books as a kid.

    Watched Avengers: Age of Ultron

Formulaic isn't it? They backed themselves into a corner by making every single character an invincible super warrior (even the spy and Robin hood). So the only way they can create "tension" is to have them fight each other for half the movie.

Meh

I saw this at the movies when I was 7. Goose dying still makes me sad. But, what a cool film.

Valhalla Rising

Despite the 1.2 star rating on Netflix, I'm a fan of Mads Mikkelsen and historical fiction in general.

I can see why people rated it that way, but I had no real issues with it. Just a lot of nothing in between the gaps of action and Mads Mikkelsen ripping people apart with his bare hands.

Dallas Buyers Club. Sad, frustrating, horrible, McConaughey and Leto were both very good. The weight loss was seriously scary, their poor bodies. Jennifer Garner's role was a bit pointless.

All the President's Men. Hoffman and Redford investigate Watergate. This was a bit hard to follow at times, but the thing that annoyed me most was the end. This was the scandal that brought down a president, but they didn't show Nixon's downfall or his resignation, those two huge things were reduced to a minute montage of typewritten newswire feeds.

Concussion: Will Smith movie about concussion/brain issues in the NFL.

This movie (and Pixels) are examples of where the reputation/ratings/reviews of a movie can sometimes be completely out of step with how good the movie is. I saw Pixels in a packed theatre that spent most of the time laughing yet it was panned as being unfunny - likely just because of Adam Sandler.

I haven't seen a good review of Concussion but it's a thoroughly decent movie. Smith is good as an African doctor (once you get used to his accent) and the supporting cast do pretty well too, Albert Brooks is good, David Morse is good as a former player and Gugu Mbatha-Raw is both hot and good in this movie.

Well worth the $10 I paid to see it. (I have $10 movies all February :)).

Not sure the NFL will be too happy with it though.

Up. Nice story. Those PIXAR movies know how to tug on the heart strings.
