@antipodean I deliberately didn't put that one up, because, well, ummm, ahhh. That was before I became all grown up of course...

Larson, Python, Airplane / Flying High were my go to when things got a bit boring, or a bit too exciting on occasions. Great way to relieve the monotony, or lighten the tension.

Nothing like a "looks like I chose the wrong week to give up sniffing glue" when you are going to land in a typhoon. Gets the crew onside every time.

@Machpants Oh yes. Many quotes from slack bladder too, and Lord Flashheart.

The "treat your woman like a kite" was:
"Get inside her 5 times a day and take her to heaven and back", wasn't it? Said that far too often.

Surprised I kept my job when I look back.

You are not my kind of fun! 🙂

I remember when we were on a flight to Darwin and there were only about 5 aboard so I spent a lot up in with the flight crew. As we were going over the GAFA (if I remember rightly) the Captain asked if I wanted a go flying. Obviously I was all over that.

I knew the basics and he got me to do a few things to make sure all was ok and let me "have the wheel" for about 1 minute I was loving it but then we started to nose-dive and I had no idea why and he "panicked" and start shouting all these instructions at me and I was freaking out!!! What I didn't realise was that the co-pilot and Captain had played this game many times and the Co was doing something to make it dive.

Everybody loved that wee gag apart from yours truly.

Did get to fly for about an hour though after that and while it was no big deal to keep it straight and at an altitude, I friggen loved it. It was thrilling. (not as cool as hanging feet over the ramp as you're flying over Auckland Harbour! That was wicked and I have a photo of it.)

I might well know your pilot there. Probably learnt from this skit like I did:

“The scransoms above your head are now ready to flange. Please unfasten your safety belts and press the emergency photoscamps on the back of the seats behind you”

Got to admit to actually saying that on the PA.

F/O had just said "why do we bother with PAs, nobody listens anyway"

"Let's find out", was not my smartest move. Some people were indeed listening.

I didn't actually get the tea and biscuits meeting with management that I was expecting afterwards, but they certainly knew who I was.

How long had you been a Captain for before doing that risky move?

Imagine that in nowadays. Peoples feelings would be hurt....

Over a decade. I think there was just a lot of eye rolling when they saw that it was me. There was a time when we were valued and it was difficult for management to get rid of us. Now we're all out of work and jets are littered around in deserts. Strange world. Still, I am going to go and collect one of the discarded jets and get @RL from Heathrow and take her to Melbourne where she can get locked up with a security guard for two weeks. Sorry, her friend. Ooops. So there is work out there.

Yeah, wouldn't try jokes like that now I don't think. People are far too precious and lost their sense of humour.

We had a lot more fun pre 911 as well, when we had pax up on the flight deck. The cabin crew would scout for hotties to invite up the front for take off or landing. Separating us from the public with a bullet proof door may have been wise in hindsight.

They shouldn't have let me talk to them either.

This is fabulous news. I love far side. There is one cartoon from all his books that no matter what, I just don't get. I will try and hunt it down but is has baffled me ever since I first started reading them.

Was it the one in the garage / workshop? A couple. Of guys standing there doing not much? I never got that one

@Snowy The best/worst one I heard was the captain of a VC-10 transitting between Falklands and Ascension announcing something along the lines of 'we're past the point of no return, so any problems we won't be going back to the Falklands' (queue cheers from the forces personnel in the back) 'unfortunately it now means all you women are now ugly again'

Went down like a bag of sick with the senior female officer on board.

This was another favourite from Larson in the same theme of inappropriate PAs:

I so wanted to do that one too, but after the "scransoms" one...

It's the combination of the weirdness and the day-to-day I love.

Check out Gahan Wilson. Similar to Larson but a bit more surreal.

One Gary Larson cartoon I can't find - and would love a copy - is where some wolves are looking down on a convoy of sheep driving trucks with mounted machine guns, missile launchers & flame-throwers driving thru a valley.

The caption was "The moment when wolves realised the sheep would no longer be a push-over "
