@Snowy we are going June/July. So Rome is going to be fucking packed.

Opening this thread took me back to here for some reason.

Reckon Rome may not be too crowded ...

No queues except for the ICU....

and it finally happened. Our flights to Europe have been officially cancelled

    fucking stupid fucking virus

    Refund or credit?

so far refunds. However my Singapore money still hasn't come through. All just stashed in a savings account until we can travel again.

Air NZ have only offered credits. We have a Hawaii trip in July that I will be pushing for a refund. Apparently this should be a done thing once the flights are officially cancelled

We had a US trip planned and they offered credits too. Once the flight is cancelled you can get a refund, which we are in the process of getting.

So it pays to wait for cancellation?

We did, not by design as were planning on just going next year. Now we are making plans to travel inside NZ as there is more certainty, and to try and help more local businesses.

We're supposed to be travelling to the USA in August, flying out on the 9th direct to Chicago. Wife's birthday, so we were going to spend a few days in Chicago, New York (for the actual day), Boston, and a tour of Niagara Falls, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and back via LA (it was cheaper to stop over in LA overnight than to fly straight home).

Can't say we're too keen right now, so are hoping for flight cancellation so we can get our money back. Credit would be better than nothing, at least we could use that round NZ. Our travel insurance doesn't have an exclusion for pandemics, but it does exclude government regulation, so if the flights resume but there are border restrictions, we're just out of luck as far as I can tell.

Ah, but in this scenario did you go to a local bar where they unironically played Butterfly by Crazy Town?

Any tips? Our US flight got cancelled so we managed to get most of our money back (still a bit to go, but our travel agent is working on it), and opted for a week in Auckland with a 3 day road trip around Northland at the start and another 3 days around BoP after. We want to go to Cape Reinga to say we did, and stop by Waitangi because we probably won't be up that way again, but what else do we want to look to in the 3 days?

@Godder family run glow worm caves 25 minutes south of Paihia is great. Go to Waiheke Island for a vineyard lunch

@canefan Thanks! We had a potential plan of visiting Russell for the sake of NZ history, so the caves would fit with a trip there via the ferry from Paihia.

Definitely want to go to Waitangi. Staying in Russell has lots of character, we usually stay in Paihia which has more eating options and is more central

Cape Reinga is really stunning. Definitely check it out. There are lots of nice bays (Cooper's Beach) on the way up there. Russell is lovely, worth spending some time there. Walk over to some of the northern bays, then come back to the Duke of Marlborough hotel for a drink while watching the sunset. All down the east coast (e.g. Oakura) is really beautiful. Tutukaka is a nice spot.

Heaps of scenic walks around those locations. Mangawhai Heads cliff walk is worth it too. Matakana is a nice spot for lunch, and nearby Tawharanui Regional Park is worth visiting.

I was thinking about the Cape for next holidays. What is the best way to get there? I've heard of people taking bus tours from Paihia but it's a long day. Where is the closest biggish town where you can stay and use as a jump point?

We just did the Tauranga Gisborne drive on SH2. Beautiful, Gisborne is pretty small but if you love outdoors stuff its pretty

It made for a long day, but we enjoyed driving up there and back, and visiting different spots on each leg.
