Flanders pointed out 11 of last year's National Top Four competition winning squad have returned this season. They include winger Mefi Tupou, locks Fraser Taurima-Heperi and Donovan Godinet and himself who will be eligible again next year.

Feilding HS 38 - 0 St John's HastingsNapier Boys fully deserved their win. They were dominant all game, except for a brief episode in the second half when they had to defend their try line, scrum after scrum, until Gisborne made a mistake. The score could have been a lot higher. Gisborne gave away a lot of penalties when defending in their 22 and they thoroughly deserved to be carded for it, but the ref kept the card in his pocket. A few handbags were thrown around, too, as Gisborne boys got a bit irritated from being under the pump all the time. It seemed also a spectator standing near the Gisborne end of the field got involved at some point. Not good. Anyway, good start from Napier boys, but it's too early to really say how strong they are. Gisborne may just be very weak. Particularly, Napier Boys' ball handling, defence and overall decision-making were good.
Hastings Boys was the opposite of Napier Boys. They were dominated for most of the game. Palmerston North have some really big boys in their squad and they played well. Hastings had to defend for most of the game and sometimes the big boys from the Poo just walked straight through them. In the second half, Hastings got a bit more ball and attacked more frequently, but they couldn't get through the Palmy wall, even when they had a man more when a Palmerston North player was sent to the bin. What let Hastings Boys down most during the game was their handling errors. That's a big work-on. From the Hastings players that I recognised (couldn't see jersey numbers), Cooper Flanders and Mefi Tupou played well. Hastings Boys have lost about 8 players from last year. That's not many, but most of these players were their stars (a.o. Latrell Smiler-Ah Kiong, Julian Goerke, Jordan Thompson-Dunn, Emil Crichton, Joeli Rauca). They were missing a few players in this game, too, but I don't think this team is as strong as last year's.
I didn't see the CNI game, but I don't think the score will surprise anyone. St John's always finishes close to the bottom of the table and FAHS is probably the strongest in their pool.

HT: Hastings Boys 3 - 10 Napier Boys
The only try scored by Jayden Stok for Napier at the end of the first half. Napier deserved to be up by more; Hastings giving away penalty after penalty on defence. They had two players sent off at some point with yellow for repeated offside, although I think the 2nd was a bit harsh. Some nice breaks from Hastings, leading to nothing. It's been mostly Napier with the ball.
I like what I've seen from Napier's TH prop Ma'a, their no. 8 Malasia, second five Maxwell, centre Stok and some nice kicking from fullback Moleli.
For Hastings, not too many standing out; probably Andrew Hayward the best of the starting XV.
Apparently, the wind is playing a role, so we might see a game of two halves.

Hastings was stronger after the break and put the first points on the board via a great try by hooker Jacob Dorward, which was converted by first five Hoera Stephenson. Hastings were far more disciplined in the second spell and also more competitive on attack. Cooper Flanders made the tackle of the game after a Napier line-out, but it wasn't meant to be. Not long after, Napier hooker Will Robinson went over for a try at the other end of the field, making int 10 - 15 to the visitors.
Hastings' best were Andrew Hayward, Cooper Flanders, Jacob Howard and Mefi Tupou, who came close to scoring a few times.
Napier's best and MOTM was Jayden Stok. I think he's a great prospect for the future and one to keep an eye on. -

One extremely pleasing thing was that the only sign of non rugby goal posts on the playing grounds were so far away that they may as well have been in Havelock North, even then that particular ground looked to be way under regulation size. Excellent work HBHS giving slight encouragement to non rugby players by providing them with some ground to use until they come to realise that rugby is they only game that really counts for men in NZ. -

And gloat away, we've been in a rare period in Hastings, with our lack of a boarding (poaching) house and three other boys schools to suck up potential students, of success so I've been gloating away, shoes on the other foot now.
HBHS seems to be in the lull year this year so the 15-10 loss doesn't seem so bad, just wish it was to another team.
