Last night I turned on Sky Arts to see Deep Purple come hell or high water was on. It's a concert/doc from 1993 which was right at the end of the mark II DP. Really great concert and some interesting interviews. Some key points

Gillan looks ridiculously like Bill Murray with long hair
Blackmore really looks like he didn't want to be there. Walks off stage between his solo's quite often
Paice was an utterly ridiculous looking specimen at that point in time.
I had the sound through my 15 year old Bose setup and it was great.
Amazing how much camera technology has changed. The concert looks really really shit from a lighting perspective - but I went to a few back then and they just weren't. So I deduce it must be the camera's!

It's really worth a watch if you are into their music.

Jon Lord and Roger Glover don’t even rate a mention then ?

@MN5 Glover does a lot of interviews but not much focus on him on stage. Lord is front and center on the Hammond, but that instrument has never really been my thing. Key part of DP for sure tho

Richie will always be just about the best guitarist ever for me. Amazing feel, tone and technique. Paice is an incredible drummer too. In fact about the only guy I don’t rate as an all time great is Glover but he did his job solidly enough and was also a whiz in the studio.

Something from before I was born.....In High Fidelity by Sarah Vaughan

Amazing production values for a 1955 record. Terrific voice and great songs but perhaps a bit too perfect and soul-less for me? Lacks the sheer joy and energy or emotion you get from, say, Ella Fitzgerald or Peggy Lee.

I've got this on DVD. You can see the friction between the band and Blackmore. Ritchie was gone a few weeks later. I need to watch again.

@voodoo I have. Interesting enough if you like the guitarists featured. They have different abilities and approaches to their music.

@Bovidae cheers, will give it a go. It's all about building the love for the instrument for the boy at this stage. He's been plugging away writing his own stuff on a borrowed Ibanez this week, fun to watch!

I saw it close to when the documentary was released, so over 10 years ago.

An Ibanez? I've seen some very good guitarists playing those.

Sounds like an absolute cock to be fair but I guess the band tolerated him cos of his sheer brilliance. Nowadays he tarnishes the legacy by playing middle aged self indulgent minstrel type shit with his wife. I would have loved to have seen him live but he was long gone when they toured in 06.

@MN5 The 1984 Perfect Strangers tour would have been great to see. Too young unfortunately.

Yeah, another cool kiwiana story. We planned to be here in Wanaka for a few weeks, so I got my kid into some lessons. His teacher then also hooked him up with 2 older kids for a few evening jam sessions. My lad only has his acoustic with him so one of the older kids lent him his Ibanez plus amp and cords after only knowing him for 30 minutes.

    How cool is that?

Yeah I had that on tape back in the day. They sounded sensational.

Hers a clip from that era, guitar wankery at its finest

On the 'Brave New World' soundtrack.

Could have been written last week. Or some time in the future. Timeless.

Glad I'm not so grumpy and curmudgeony that I can't occasionally listen to something new and enjoy it. Catchy and has cool lyrics.
