@MN5 Kurt Cobain is one of the more successful marketing creations ever

Which from what I’ve read about him he would have despised

    Keeping to the music motif...

Electric Light Orchestra produced some of the best music in the world during the 70's and 80's. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius.

Blowing his own head off certainly showed commitment to the cause though

For a band that Pretty much single handedly Invented metal I don’t think Black Sabbath get their dues compared to others

wait, what? Massively lauded given their niche. And still regarded among the greatest bands of all time, despite not having broad market appeal.

I think their place in the pantheon of great rock bands is secure, and also their placing is pretty much bang on.

A thread that is a safe space* for you to air those thoughts you keep in your head because you know people are going to look at you funny when you say them out loud.

    For instance

I just head the new Pearl Jam song. It's garbage. And it cemented in my mind that Pearl Jam, a band that has sold more than 85 million albums, are the most over rated band of my generation.

Their first album, lauded as a modern classic, is for the most parts pretty mediocre, and only did any good because they were the safe, middle of the road, commercial "grunge" act. Their 2nd album was far better with far less acclaim, and their good work pretty much ended there. That was 1993. Since then? 9 deeply ordinary middle-of-the-road rock albums.

Pearl Jam are shit compared to other bands of that era. So are Nirvana.

easy. Nirvana have two pretty great albums. The Kurt Cobain myth is the most annoying thing about them.

Oh definitely. Kurt will always have a warm spot in my heart cos I learnt some of his tunes on the guitar ( I play left handed too ) purely to hook up with chicks.

But they are massively overrated overall. Yet another rock star dying early and improving the aura when in actual fact he wasn’t that amazing

Untimely death can be great for record sales and legacy

    C'mon down James Morrison

bloke definitely had issues. A drug problem and a toxic relationship will certainly help that along.

It's the anti-commercialisation, anti-popularity thing that i think is hugely over played. Shit like coming out well after Nevermind has made a bucket of money and saying he thought it was too commercial, despite having a massive hand in the production.

None of what you’re saying is untrue. Maybe I just think they deserve even more given what they spawned and the fact that every bogan who ever picked up a guitar owes them a debt of gratitude whether they realise it or not

There's an entertaining documentary on BBC at the moment about Rockfield Studios where, if BS invented metal, they were enabled greatly by having an independent farm studio in the middle of nowhere to do so. It simply wouldn't have happened in a studio owned by one of the big labels.

Done well they can elevate an otherwise ho hum band ( ZZ Top )to a whole different level.

The one on them on Netflix was terrific

Theres lots of dross ones around. I particularly hate the BBC formula ones with spotty little wannabe radio announcers talking about artists 3 times their age as if they are the first to be knowledgable about them.
I do keep an eye out for good ones though and the one about Rockfield is definitely in that category.
You pick up otherwise hidden bits of fun like when Simple Minds were recording in the house and wondering who had the big studio in the pig sty when out walks Iggy Pop and they cream themselves.

i like the really simple "Classic Albums" ones actually. Just musicians and normally the producer talking about how the sound of an album comes about.

Might be controversial. About as controversial as anything else in this thread.
