I caught a film on Sky Arts yesterday "Scream for me Sarajevo". It was based on Bruce Dickinson returning to Sarajevo 20 years after his 1994 concert in the city when the war was in full swing. The interviews with him and his minders, the peacekeepers, his band and especially the local music fans were pretty eye-opening and humbling. He came across as a top bloke, definitely a guy I'd enjoy a beer with.

Try and catch it if you can.

Jim Bob (formerly half of Carter USM) has his first album out in 7 years. It is fucking awesome - I like all the songs, so hard to pick just one to share, but here it is.

With about 24 hours to go, it is looking like charting in the top 40 in the UK, which is pretty awesome for an indie punk/pop album.

Psychedelic Furs have released their first album in 29 years and it’s pretty good too.
They’ve avoided being a pastiche of themselves trying to relive glory days

Seems like a year for old bands to find a new lease of life.
The Pretenders also have a new album which is pretty good listening. Very direct R&R (what they do best) Think Christie Hynde doing Black Keys.

Should enjoy this then. Certainly doesn’t have the voice of your average 70 year old

So, upgraded the sound systems in the lounge the other day. Purchased a sonos Amp with some Q acoustics 3050i. Neither are audiophile level geek ness in sound, but they do put out a pretty good sound. I compared them to the Sonos Playbar / Sub and the amp just blew them away.

So last night the wife went out, so I killed the TV, and lay down in front of the speakers and just listened. It's such a good way to unwind and when you get a great bit of well-recorded music, it's brilliant. I listened to a bit of Stevie Ray Vaughn, a few Jazz hits, a bit of Nina Simone & some pink floyd. Then to finish it off, and get back more onto my bogan roots, I listened to Jar of Flies in it's entirety. Was absolutely fantastic.

Anybody got any good recommendations of what sounds epic on decent kit?

It depends on what you want to hear. When I auditioned speakers 10 years or so back I wanted to find out the bass response of the speakers so used songs with plenty of bottom end.

My go-to CDs for sound have always been DSOTM and Brothers In Arms. I have SACD copies of both too.

If you want more bogan music then Tool.

If you are streaming then it won't matter with the quality of the source material.

Good call on both. I really like well recorded live stuff.

I run out of listening talent to distinguish between streaming & CD / Vinyl.

I fell dirty for pointing you towards an appalling harridan who’s talent is self publicity rather than music, but here goes. Frozen, off Madonna’s Ray of Light album. While the song is typically overblown and has her on it, William Orbit produced it and on a good system the sound is truly epic.

Any of the Rubin-produced Johnny Cash American Recordings albums will pop, his cover of “One” stands out.

Mama Don’t, off JJ Cale’s Shades album .

NIN Downward Spiral sounds even better on a great system.

Beasties Licenced to Ill (volume must be way up)

    OK Computer

Burning Down The House, Talking Heads is brilliant if it’s loud.

Steely Dan’s Aja. Rikki Don’t Lose That Number of pretzel logic is maybe the best produced track on any album I’ve ever heard.

I’m doing my listening through a little valve amp and some Devialet Phantom active speakers. Loud is good.
