@Crucial Recordings from the 1970s still sound the best. Clear separation of the instruments and not brick walled/compressed.

Too many producers trying to find ways to use the new digital technology and losing sight of the music?

George Martin's production continues to astound - simple, clear and just, well, perfect.

The bulk of SACDs are for classical music and jazz artists but a lot of the "classic" rock and pop albums have been re-released as a SACD. I have a handful of SACDs myself and they sound great on my 2-channel system.

Remember you will need a SACD player, whether a dedicated CD/SACD player or a universal blu-ray player to play anything but the hybrid SACDs, so this might not be the wisest investment for only a handful of CDs. My audio gear is expensive so it's all relative.

@Crucial Recordings from the 1970s still sound the best. Clear separation of the instruments and not brick walled/compressed.

Has much been re-mixed and re-released to take advantage of multi-channel? I guess if it is it will be done 5.1? Trouble is that tech keeps surpassing available mixes rather than formats.

Sounds great though. Like @Victor-Meldrew I used to do sound work and appreciate what can be done. My interest is more in listening to what good producers could do with what was available. Some tracks, although mixed for transistor radios have some amazing complexity behind them that can still shine through.
These days a lot of my listening is compressed. Either streaming curated playlists or streamed radio shows where I can hear a lot of new old music so really good hardware would be a total waste. Half decent earphones and some Sonos gear do me well enough.

I have a bit of a nostalgic like for an 80s sound as engineers and producers were learning (and often overusing) new digital tech in studios.
When done well it is a distinctly good sound.

This website has a lot of info.

    HRAudio.net - High Resolution Audio
    **Are all SA-CDs multichannel?**
No, especially in the beginning many SA-CDs released were stereo only. Nowadays most SA-CDs released are stereo plus multichannel. Two thirds of all SA-CD titles are multichannel and the general trend is up.

Yep. The likes of George Martin & Alan Parsons sure stretched boundaries but never lost sight of the need for the result to sound good.

Here's a video of 2 geniuses discussing production. The interaction at 5:01 is priceless.

    @Bovidae

Thanks for that link. Will look at it. That said, my ear bandwidth is probably only 50hz to 13khz these days....

@Nevorian I've been listening to this too and thought I'd posted it ... but I guess I didn't.

Great song from a talk show band. 😉

It shits me that the only way I can describe The Roots to people in a way they might recognise is in relation to a seppo talk show.
Easily in the top 5 live gigs I've seen, multiple times. Fucking excellent.

Happy birthday Roy Ayers. 80 years young.

Still going strong too. I was lucky enough to see him a couple of years ago at the Jazz Cafe.

One of the most sampled songs ever

Been listening to The Real Thing (the album) by FNM a lot recently. It's an absolute classic and every time I listen to Epic, I'm right back at intermediate school with classmate playing it to me for the first time. I'd never heard anything that awesome before.

Anyway, really dig Woodpecker from Mars and was looking for a live performance on YouTube and found this. What a way to open a gig. I would have completely lost my shit. Gutted they postponed this year, fingers x they make it next year.

Apologies for shit quality, but I think the music and the performance holds up.

@MajorRage I used to have their Live at Brixton concert on video that I used to thrash, what was funny is that they bust into New Kids on the Block mid concert (in We Care a Lot) and the other concert on that same video tape was my sisters New Kids on the Block.

@Nepia Yeah, they always do stuff like that. I remember in the concert half through a song they started doing some back for good by take that ...
