Spielberg is an amazing story teller whose body of work makes him almost without peer. SPR has aged very well and although most of the movie is your typical American flag waving tripe, the opening sequence is movie making brilliance.

I thought Nolan's Dunkirk was its equal. Those two pretty much top of the pile in my opinion.
Hmmmmmm, it's damn close I'll give it that but not quite. Still brilliant.

......and to rub it in even more he did Duel ( not hugely known but a personal favourite ), Jaws, Indiana Jones, ET, Jurassic Park..........that's fucken Don Bradman > any other cricketer right then and there !!!!!

watching that with a great surround sound system makes it so much better too, hearing the bullets all round you.
TR Jnr & I watched it a few years ago, I think it is more ensuring you are there to watch it with them for the inevitable questions or just explain things to them if they need it, your younger one's attention may waver as it is quite a long film.

Good advice. Oldest plays all those Call of Duty games on PS4, youngest is more into the more peaceful SIms type simulations, shit its funny how kids are wired differently.
I fully intend to watch intently and field about a million questions.

My boys are coming on a roadie with me for work this week and ex wife has given the go ahead to watch SPR on Netflix provided there's some parental guidance. Do other ferners reckon it's an appropriate flick for a 10 and 12 year old to watch ? interested in some thoughts.
The opening scenes as they hit the beach are epic. You feel like you are there, in all it's white knuckle glory

absolutely.......but it's also the rest of it that's brilliant too. Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, Ed Burns and the rest absolutely knock it out of the park too. There's not a shit performance amongst the whole ensemble.

Yeah that is a big thing, they were epic in their roles. Whereas I though Dunkirk was shit. No way all that stuff would happen, people saving each other lives etc, and no one would say a word. Totally broke the immersion for me.
And don't even start on the ever gliding Spit at the end, ugh
At least SPR was moderately realistic.

The pacing of Dunkirk was too slow.
SPR is a great movie. I watched again after visiting some of the locations (beaches, cemeteries) . Even Vin Diesel was passable as an actor.
Even in his brief screen time you genuinely gave a shit about him and it was sad when he died.....the same can be said of all of them.
There was massive potential to make Matt Damons Ryan character a complete cock but they didnt go with that angle either.
The whole movie just works like nothing else, fuck it's good.
I need to see Dunkirk again to pass more judgement, as I recall the tension in it works brilliantly, maybe others saw it as moving too slow to be fair

Watched "The Gentlemen" last night, now on Amazon at least in Australia.
Guy Ritchie movie following in the footsteps of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Not my favourite of the three, but having not watched either of the previous two recently was a welcome throw back to both.

Slightly late to the Saving Private Ryan discussion but I think it's great, even though my most recent rewatch was in cabbage 720p due to some Netflix issue. In saying that I think Band of Brothers is better, although in a different medium, but without SPR we don't get BoB.
I like Dunkirk, but it's not up with SPR, and Nolan's anti CGI meant that the beach never looked full enough which just annoyed me after seeing pics.
The most overrated war movie of recent times is 1917. The "not" one shot technical aspect was good, but my god the script was bollocks.

I think even a lot of his unheralded later films are bloody good too: Bridge of Spies is a great underrated drama, Ready Player One a fun pop culture movie, Lincoln made DDL slightly watchable again for me and that's no mean feat, Munich was a bloody good action thriller and the favourite film of my Palestinian mate, and I also enjoyed The Post as a companion piece to All The Presidents Men. I haven't seen War Horse or The Terminal though.

And excellent companion piece to Saving Private Ryan is the Spielberg Hanks produced Band of Brothers. Outstanding story, cast, everything, captured the spirit of Ryan but spread out over 10 episodes

It was a watched lots as a kid movie for me, tried watching it as an adult after SPR and it was definitely a harder watch. So too a Bridge Too Far.
In saying that if I walked past the TV and they were playing I'd probably stop and watch.
