The Social Dilemma
Okay, it's a documentary not a film, but it's on netflix.
Doc is about, obviously, the danger that social media poses to society. Interviews are with a bunch of guys who used to work for the big social companies. The interviews themselves are pretty good, focused on how the algorithms drive the social media business model. But it is interspersed with these acted bits that i guess try to humanise and illustrate their points, but just come across as cringy as fuck.
I guess the main message to come out is these companies aren't, contrary to popular opinion, manipulating searches to drive home their own agenda. Searches are manipulated to keep you engaged for as long as possible, based purely on the enormous amount of data they already have on you.
It's not bad, but it's not that great either. And i can't say there was any single "wow" moment in there.

Also, if you're someone who checks social media on their phone before taking morning piss, you're their target.
If you're not, you may just be OK.

watching it, my phone went "ding" and so my watch vibrated as well. i actually physically resisted the urge to check!
i think the point is everyone is their target.

@mariner4life i found the bits on the effect it may be having on kids pertinent. It's disturbing how many jobs I have responded to that are a result of kids, some younger than 10 years old, throwing tantrums and smashing property, assaulting mum or dad, or self harming because their ipads or phones have been taken away from them. The wee darlings are like miniature junkies.
-
@Crazy-Horse TR Jnr watched it, while he was surprised and said it was a bit scary what happens, hasn't changed his habits

yeah absolutely, that bit scared me a little. I guess hearing about how these guys are deliberately tapping in to the addiction parts of the brain just rammed home how much i don't want my kids to have a phone.

@taniwharugby like @mariner4life says, they are tapping into the addiction parts of the brain and often it goes unnoticed. If one of the guys interviewed said he still falls for the tricks even though he knows how they work, it's no wonder Jnr hasn't changed a thing.

knowing your line of work, the parts discussing the surge in self harm and suicide from about the exact time social media went on your phone must have been jarring

@mariner4life there is also that thing about bullying on social media and how it is more likely while kids are alone in thier rooms on a device than a family room.
Wife and I don't have our phones in our rooms overnight, kids aren't supposed to either, although they have 'accidentally' a few times.
All phones are to be left together on the bench.

Get them one of these:
Should be fine. They'll hate you but addiction won't be a problem.

@MN5 Band of Brothers next?
More than likely. There are other war flicks on the horizon too.

My boys aren't too bad but my step daughter is shocking with those farking devices. I get a sick pleasure from randomly turning off the Wifi and waiting for the banshee like screams of horror.

I've just watched Dune (1984). It's not quite as bad as I remembered but still a bit of a mess (so a typical David Lynch movie), and with average SFX. I am looking forward to the 2020 version
There is a three hour version on YouTube. Give that a hoon. Answers a few niggly questions and is just better all round

Watched "The Gentlemen" last night, now on Amazon at least in Australia.
Guy Ritchie movie following in the footsteps of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Not my favourite of the three, but having not watched either of the previous two recently was a welcome throw back to both.
4 ganja crews out of 5 gangsters
Yep agree watched with the wife and enjoyed it so much stayed up and re-watched Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Watched this last night. It was kinda fun, but a comfortable 4th out of those mentioned earlier and adding RocknRoller
Hugh Grant was fun. Collin was great. Henry Golding really sucked. No great villain and the storyline never quite grabbed me.
3 underground bunkers out of 5 all-female mechanic crews.
