@Nevorian And Clarke is particulary good under the high ball, to the point that the Crusaders plan was to NOT kick to him.

You saw a presentation at a pub didn't you

    Deep cut. I like.

Jordie Barrett ahead of Will Jordan at 14 makes very little sense IMHO.

Big blow for the Wallabies with O’Connor out now with a knee injury. With To’omua out for the season that means a completely reconstructed backline. Brumbies youngster Noah Lolesio, just 20, will come in as playmaker with Kiwi-born Irae Simone, his Brumbies partner, outside him.

Frizell is playing well. The thing I worry about is the inconsistency of Karl T, Pat T, and Ofa. Could be a hard day at the office if these guys don't get their head right.

Just don't get Jordie at 14 though. Class player but out of position for me and can't see the logic of it.

I think having Reiko on the bench with Laumape strongly suggests that they are looking at Reiko getting a run on the wing. Jordie needs to be much more effective in the air to justify his place.

Has Fozzy mentioned Jordan at all?

Personally, I'd give Akira a go, but I can live with Frizell in the jersey.

The TWM, like the previous TWM, probably see issues with Akira around his attitude.

He's a talent though, and would be worth at least bringing him into the squad to see where his head is at. Hopefully, like Ali Williams, he'll come tight.

Huh? He's already in the squad.

Considering Jordie seems stuck in mud at 14, the rest of the team doesn't look too bad! Here's to a good game where I still get to complain about something.

While I don't think anyone wants JB on the right wing, he is averaging a try per test so far.

It would be good to see more action down the left flank tomorrow.

    Team has been released:

    3 Ofa Tuungafasi (37)
    4 Patrick Tuipulotu (32)

    6 Shannon Frizell (11)
    7 Sam Cane (70) - captain
    8 Hoskins Sotutu (2)
    9 Aaron Smith (94)
    10 Richie Mo'unga (19)
    11 Caleb Clarke (2)
    12 Jack Goodhue (15)
    13 Anton Lienert-Brown (45)
    14 Jordie Barrett (19)
    15 Beauden Barrett (85)

    17 Alex Hodgman (1)
    18 Tyrel Lomax (2)
    19 Scott Barrett (37)
    20 Dalton Papalii (3)
    21 TJ Perenara (66)
    22 Ngani Laumape (13)
    23 Rieko Ioane (31)

Bledisloe ripe for the keeping and a double take when you read Jordie on a wing and Reiko on a bench.

    Doesn't seem right at all

Extra experience for Jordie for a future on the wing?

    Yeah, nah

Unless they are taking the Ben Smith approach with Jordie where Bender didn’t get his first start as fullback until more than 20 tests into his AB career. And I think only once did he even switch to fullback in that time.

And I recall there were critics when he was selected for the wing (and even the ABs itself) given there was some ‘firepower’ available like Piutau etc.

And looking back over his whole AB career Bender played as much on the right wing as he did at fullback.

They just seem keen to build Jordie’s experience.

Jordie on the wing is all about experience, low error rate and defence.

I'm sure they don't want two absolute rookies at the back together in Clarke and Jordan vs Aus and I'm sure they think Jordie will score most of the tries he should, while being the best defensive option on the right wing. A sort of bigger, slower version of Ben Smith.

Probably also a bit of man management in that they don't want to push Beaudy to the bench and have him fuck off overseas permanently.

Pretty sure it's a short term measure, though.

IIRC that was also during the 'new' tactic of a wing/fullback that was kind of pioneered accidently by Cory Jane.
CJ showed the value in having a wing that could read the game like a fullback and how kicks (thanks you South Africa) could be covered better with that setup.
Bender followed perfectly into that plan especially once opposition kicking tactions adjusted to high kicks to the sides a bit more (as opposed to trying to pick a spot in the backfield that the fullback would struggle to reach.

I'm guessing that Jordie might be receiving quite a few kicks. Either of the other two options are more likely to carve you up if the defence isn't really well organised.

@Nepia I reckon Jordie very clearly went up a level this year. He was excellent for the Hurricanes - barely made a mistake.

He's made a few rookie errors in the ABs, but those have to be left in the past at some point. He'll doubtless make a few more mistakes in his career - even Ben Smith got sent off in a World Cup final - but, I expect them to be relatively rare.

People like Jordan and Clarke probably still have their rookie errors in front of them - even if they ultimately become very safe options.

    That is all fair comment.

What I haven't seen from Jordie (and I am happy for someone that watched the Canes more intently this year to correct me) is great positional play at the back.
It is an aspect that doesn't quite get the testing at Super Rugby as it does at higher levels due to the styles of games played.
Bender showed excellent positional awareness as did CJ before him. I watch JB on the wing and he always has his 15 telling him where to go. If he is as good a 15 himself he should know.

yeah, shit, that would be a risk against the enormous amount of caps they would be facing...

We are second-guessing and excuse making for strange looking decisions because the coaching panel don't tell anybody anything useful.
