@JC Transported me back to the 70's only without the funny smelling cigarettes and blotting paper. Inspired me to an evening of prog rock. Yes, Crimson, Tangerine Dream, Tull, Renaissance, early Genesis - a real binge. Enjoyable - certainly some superb musicianship and brought back (too many) memories. Great trip but probably won't repeat it for another 20 years.

The vocals have put a lot of people off, but this Supertramp track is a banger:
"School" with the volume set at 11 is pretty cool too...

@dogmeat Let me know what you think. Ideally needs a dimly lit room and a glass of something red. Lake played all the guitars and multi-tracked the bass on both an electric and double bass which gives it a very rich warm sound.
Listened to the whole thing again in the last week. Can admire the musicianship & production, but it comes across as bit souless to me now, almost as if the music is serving the playing rather than the other way round. Sad, as I was a huge fan of their stuff (even have Love Beach...)
Genesis from that period seems to have a lot more warmth and feel - just seems a lot more tasteful, particularly Tony Banks' playing.

Sounds of a simple time -
Wife pissed off to the Neighbour’s tonight (oops .... don’t tell the Covid police) so after the kids went down decided to look for something to proper chill to. Came across Pink Floyd, a delicate sound of thunder.
Firstly a lot of it has proper dated. Blue Lights everywhere, terrible hair, clothes and the singers dancing is woeful.
But the music. Is just so so good. Gilmour is such a genius on the strat. Mood music at its most superb. Us and Them probably the top song, but Crazy Diamond and comfortably numb always up there. Feeling really refreshed and great now.
Side note. Solo in Comfortably Numb my fave of all time. Nobody can play it like Gilmour.

Gilmour is the ultimate "less is more" guitarist. He's always in and around my top ten and to be honest I can't even explain what exactly it is about him that is so good. But he undoubtedly is.
Far and away the best muso in Floyd in my opinion. I wonder how they would have sounded if Jeff Beck had joined, apparently he was on the shortlist at one stage.

@MN5 I’ve read plenty on him and the experts always end up with much the same conclusion. Feel.
His feel for a song is second to none. And thus the note selection and timing is always completely on point.
That could well be it. Never more demonstrated than this track, skip to about 4.30 to hear him really cut loose ( the first note at 6.53 is simply awesome ), this is probably my favourite Gilmour guitar solo.

Still love that his response to the tipper gore parent's music council panic garbage was to record a (great) song called Mother, where he literally threatened to beat up the concerned mothers of America. What a golden age, what a golden imbecile savant
motherfucker could sing though!!

Saw them at the Brixton Academy last year. Seems like forever ago.
