@Kruse doesnt that apply to the likes of ASDA and Tesco too?

Not in the same way... the Tesco "megamarkets" - sure, are pretty much a supermarket with a department store as well.
    ASDA - don't know...
But Lidl - it's just the sheer randomness of the shit. It's not that there is EVERYTHING, like there is Tesco. But there'll be frozen octopus-shaped potato nuggets, and nothing else, in the freezer. And next to that, a shelf of angle-grinders, but no other power-appliances whatsoever.

@Kruse dont think I had the pleasure of a Lidl when I was there...Aldi, Iceland, Costco, but not Lidl...

There was another, which was the little shop round the corner from where I lived, always remember soon after arriving in the UK seeing a box of Steinies on the shelf for £20, buying it and asking when they'd get more, they said never cos it never sold... 😕

Is a shop up here called Crackerjacks up here, some real random stuff, some quality parallel imports though.

edit - was Spar I think?

That made me laugh and is a pretty much nails the shopping experience

PS: ASDA has huge stores where you can buy anything and a great fruit & veg selection.

I think you would have been within your rights to frequent Morrisons, Lidl and Aldi.

We used Lidl once - thought the quality of their stuff was crap. The metal-working vice I found next to the tomatoes was good value though.

Morrison's are really in the same league as Tesco & Sainsburys but concentrate more on food rather than clothing etc. Have inhouse bakers and butchers who have great quality meat and bread selection. Terrific cheese selection as well.

@Victor-Meldrew yeah we gave up on Morrison's as their produce is always pretty naff. Often have great deals at the butcher's though (as does Waitrose). We generally stick with Tesco just due to the consistency of quality and what's available. Occasionally pop to Lidl for salami/pepperoni sticks, bubbly and left handed hedge trimmers or a pneumatic rivet gun.

    @Bones
Overall we stick with Tesco as it's the best all-rounder and great home delivery. Their people are great too.

Morrisons if we want a special cut of meat. Waitrose for hard to get stuff.

M&S is pretty much pre-made food with a small selection of overpriced groceries, at least it was when we were there but they have taken over from Waitrose as the main supplier for Ocado so they may have changed at their store as well.
We just did our base shopping on Ocado. Price and quality were good. Delivery excellent.

I remember January 2001 in London, we had dusted all our cash on millennium celebrations in Ireland, and had to walk to and from work for a month. From outer Zone 2. We lived off 11p baked beans and 15p loaves of bread.

    Great times.
