I know that isn't serious, but it is the international language of aviation too.

Some of it is indecipherable as English (over a radio) but at least they try. The French don't even bother. It's actually pretty dangerous as the guys who don't speak French lose situational awareness as to what is happening with other aircraft / controllers.

My attempts at speaking French to the French have been met with derision so I gave up.

Yeah french ATC are a bunch o fluffybunnies. They especially hate the RAF, always good to drop references to the many defeats they suffered when possible

    Reminds me of this:

*The German air controllers at Frankfurt Airport are renowned as a short-tempered lot. They not only expect one to know one's gate parking location, but how to get there without any assistance from them. So it was with some amusement that we (a Pan Am 747) listened to the following exchange between Frankfurt ground control and a British Airways 747, call sign Speedbird 206.

Speedbird 206: "Frankfurt, Speedbird 206 clear of active runway."
Ground: "Speedbird 206. Taxi to gate Alpha One-Seven."
The BA 747 pulled onto the main taxiway and slowed to a stop.

Ground: "Speedbird, do you not know where you are going?"
Speedbird 206: "Stand by, Ground, I'm looking up our gate location now."
Ground (with quite arrogant impatience): "Speedbird 206, have you not been to Frankfurt before?"
Speedbird 206 (coolly): "Yes, twice in 1944, but it was dark, -- And I didn't land."*

Read a book once on NZ's negotiations when the UK joined the then EEC, France was also involved. Apparently head Frog De Gaulle made a comment along the lines of "I can still remember those New Zealanders attacking out of the trenches, I hope nothing happens to them"

Not quite knowing how to react, a NZ diplomat was heard to mutter "Well at least we ran in the right direction....."

Mid 90's. Working for major Management Consultancy and part of a big piece of work for Deutsche Telekom headed up by the local Partner.

Said German Partner had this annoying habit of talking proudly about Germany, would knock the UK and often point out where the RAF had flattened some town or whatever and always ended his little history lecture with the words "...but I don't want to talk about the war"

One day after a long day in Frankfurt AM and driving back to Bonn, he started up again and we and the other Germans really had had enough. After Rudi pointed out some bridge or something that had been surgically removed by Bomber Command's finest, he ended with the usual "...but I don't want to talk about the war". My mate struck:

"Why don't you like talking about the war, Rudi? Is it because you lost twice?"
