So my MySky box is full with recorded rugby games that I don't want to lose. Sky wants to replace the old box with an updated version, but then I'll lose all my recorded games. Is there a way to transfer recordings from the MySky box to my PC? I don't know anything about that kind of tech stuff, so I've no idea.

I did it a few years ago but had to use a DVD recorder and then to computer. Couldn't go direct from Sky to computer (can't remember why). It is doable (possibly not legal) if you still have a DVD recorder and a computer with one too. Burn then rip.

@Snowy Maybe a stupid question, but did you record it directly from your mySky box to the DVD recorder, or did you record it via your tv? In other words, did you connect cables between your DVD recorder and your tv, or between your DVD recorder and the my Sky box?

Normally you need a device which can strip off the copy protection, not cheap

@Machpants So the copy right protection still works if you'd record something via your tv?

Direct from sky box to DVD recorder from memory (theTB shouldn't need to be involved, but you can still see what you are doing through it as the sky box is just playing the video as normal). Think I had to go old school with AV cables too (not hdmi or scart).

Yes, but you are recording from Sky not the TV. There's the time lack thing for copy right, delayed replay, but I didn't buy anything. You can't use a USB stick or the modern data transfer methods as @Machpants says without some sort of hack as far as I know, but I did get it to work.

Yeah I’ve not tried for years, used SCART to VGA which was OK. I thought that you needed something to get rid of copy protection, I could be mistaken. But you will need a capture card in your PC to record it from the HDMI. Most PCs only have HDMI out not in. Or buy a DVD recorder, not that I’ve seen those for a while!

It looks like I just have to suck it up and lose those recordings. Maybe watch them one more time over Christmas and then have the box replaced. 😞

    Thanks for the replies, guys!

@Stargazer yeah a quick Google says you’ll have to be able to strip HDCP 2.2

If your Sky box has HDMI out, you'll want a HDMI stripper that can strip HDCP and then feed into something like a Hauppauge Colossus 2 PCI Express Internal card on your PC. Otherwise your options are to convert to analogue which means purchasing a HDMI to Component Video Converter for best quality. You'll still need component input to your PC.

@Stargazer I had a separate DVDR which I recorded onto several years back, never had any issues with copyright stuff.

I even uploaded edited clips from them onto Social Media, only issue there was the music I had over it.

@taniwharugby Yeah I think the digital (HDMI) to analog (Component) sorts out the copy protection

@Stargazer I had a thread on the Northland Rugby forum when I used to make highlights, think the last one was 4 or 5 years ago?

If I remember the log in to the Youtube account I used I could check there too haha.

    edit: was 5 years ago

The USB port is deliberately inactive on the MySky boxes to make transfer of recorded content more difficult.

I was going through my old VHS collection a few weeks back and there are games I recorded 20+ years ago that still aren't available on YouTube.

I still have a high quality VCR, which I assume will still work. I will connect to a TV at some stage to check out the quality of the recordings I kept. But, yes, we complain about low quality digital content but they are so much better than the grainy pictures from a VHS.

I have the 1992 NPC final which is a classic. 🙂 Also, the 2 Maori games against Aust from the early 2000s. The problem is that any recording from the early 2000s would be NTSC.
