The margin of error at McLean Park is so small given the short boundary. Pressure on the bowlers to get it right or it usually goes the distance.

Can only assume the pitch evened out and got quicker with a bit of dew after the sun buggered off?

What other explanation is there to the lack of slower balls or variations, especially after Phillips made a point of it in his interview.
